Sydney FC’s once firm grip on the minor premiership is slipping, as the Sky Blues are only five points ahead of the second placed Newcastle Jets after last weekend’s results.
Brisbane shocked the Sky Blues in the first half, with the Roar scoring two goals to lead at the break.
Sydney salvaged a second half goal, but were unable to score a second, ensuring their first home loss in 27 matches, dating back to the 2015-16 season.
Despite the loss, their odds of winning the 2017-18 A-League have remained steady at $1.72 at Sportsbet.
Newcastle’s gritty 1-0 win against Wellington in Auckland means the Jets are 12 points clear of third placed Melbourne Victory and are guaranteed a top two finish if they win this weekend.
The Jets are $4.20 to win the A-League, the shortest they have been all season.
Melbourne Victory’s 5-2 win against Central Coast has done little to give punters faith in them as contenders for the title, with Victory’s odds of winning the championship actually dropping despite the win.
Victory were $8 last week and have drifted out to $8.50 after their win against the lowly Mariners.
As predicted in our A-League preview last week, Adelaide and Melbourne City would look to nullify each other and they did, with the match ending in a draw.
City had a late Bruno Fornaroli goal corrected ruled out for offside, ensuring scores remained 1-1.
The goal for City in the remaining rounds will be to ensure a first week final, as they are four points clear in fourth position, ahead of Adelaide and Western Sydney.
City has remained steady at $8.50 to win the title, but Adelaide has seen a big drift this week after their draw on Friday night.
The Reds have gone from $26 to $36 at Sportsbet, as their chances of hosting a home final slip away with each passing game.
Brisbane’s win against the top of the table Sky Blues on Saturday night has injected life into the Roar’s season, which for the most part has been spent in the bottom half of the table.
Brisbane are just two points outside the top six, with their remaining matches against Wellington, Central Coast, Western Sydney and Perth.
With such winnable games remaining, the Roar’s outright odds have plummeted from $91 to $46 at Sportsbet.
Despite not playing last weekend, Perth’s title winning odds have dropped from $81 to $126, while the Wanderers have come in from $19 to $18.
Both Wellington and Central Coast continue to accumulate losses this season, with both sides well and truly out of finals contention and $501 shots to win the title.
A-League Outright Odds – Sportsbet
Sydney FC $1.72
Melbourne Victory $8.50
Melbourne City $8.50
Western Sydney $18
Central Coast $501
