Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets have strengthened their position at top of the table after Round 19 of the 2017/18 Hyundai A-League season with both sides recording victories over the weekend.
The Sky Blues were dominant in their 4-0 home victory at Allianz Stadium over bottom placed Wellington Phoenix on Friday night.
On Saturday afternoon at their McDonald Jones Stadium home, the Jets were able to register a 2-0 result against last year’s runner-up the Melbourne Victory.
From a betting perspective, the results don’t make any change in the A-League outright winner market with Sydney at $1.72 and Newcastle $4.50, the same as last week.
If you believe the two sides will do battle come grand final weekend, you can get $2.70 for Sydney FC v Newcastle Jets in the Name the Finalists market.
Third placed Melbourne City FC had a challenging assignment to ensure they didn’t lose any ground from the top two, needing to travel to Suncorp Stadium for their Sunday evening clash with the Brisbane Roar.
They passed the test after being 0-1 down after 14 minutes to record two goals in the 19th and 66th minutes to get a 2-1 lead.
Then at the 78 minute mark the Roar had a penalty kick to level the scores but City keeper Dean Bouzanis was able to save Massimo Maccarone’s attempt for goal to preserve the 2-1 lead, which the side was able to retain for the remainder of the game.
Melbourne City’s 2-1 victory sees their season outright winner price unchanged at $6.50.
Adelaide United’s win over the Perth Glory 2-1 on Saturday night sees them swap places with Melbourne Victory at fourth position on the table.
They shorten slightly to $18 for the title, from $20 last week, with the Victory now at $9.50 after previously being at $7.50 at the end of Round 18.
The other fixture on the weekend saw the Western Sydney Wanderers record an away win over the Central Coast Mariners 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Wanderers rise above Brisbane to sixth position on the table and are now $17 for the title, up from $23.
Brisbane, Perth, Central Coast and Wellington form the remainder of the ladder positions.
In other markets, the ninth placed Mariners, two points above Wellington, are currently paying $2.50 to take out the wooden spoon, with the Phoenix a $1.72 favourite.
