Five rounds remain in the 2017-18 Hyundai A-League regular season, with Sydney FC eight points clear of Newcastle in top spot.
The battle for a top six position is sure to be feisty in the closing rounds, with Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane all with a chance of playing finals this season.
Central Coast and Wellington are separated by only three points at the foot of the table in the battle of the wooden spoon.
Adelaide United versus Melbourne City
Friday, 16 March 2018 at 7.50pm at Hindmarsh
After a bye week, Adelaide will be hoping to stop a three match winless streak when they face Melbourne City in the match of the round on Friday night.
City are narrow favourites at $2.37 at Sportsbet, with Adelaide the home underdog at $2.50.
The Reds are clinging to a spot in the top six, just three points clear of the seventh placed Perth Glory.
Melbourne City last played a fortnight ago in a 2-1 derby loss against Melbourne Victory. Before that, City’s form has been up and down, with a demoralizing loss to Perth after leading for over 80 minutes.
City have won the last three matches against Adelaide, including a 5-0 thumping in Melbourne earlier this year.
We aren’t convinced City have that killer instinct to beat a desperate Adelaide team, with the draw looking like the more favourable bet.
Best bet- Adelaide United and Melbourne City draw at $3.40
Wellington Phoenix versus Newcastle Jets
Saturday, 17 January 2018 at 5.35pm AEDST at QBE Stadium
Newcastle put on one of the most rousing performances the A-League has seen in some time defeating Sydney 2-1 and playing with 10 men for 80 minutes.
The Jets continue to be the Sky Blues main threat and a win against the Phoenix on Saturday will close the gap at the top of the table to just five points.
Newcastle are heavy favourites at $1.83 at Sportsbet, with the bottom of the table Phoenix $3.50 outsiders.
In a stunning upset the last time these two teams met in Newcastle, it was the Phoenix who prevailed with a 3-2 win.
Wellington has only lost one of its past five home matches against the Jets, with New Zealand far from a happy hunting ground for the visitors.
Newcastle have scored multiple goals in five of their past six matches.
The Jets have been a better team in the second half of matches as opposed to the first half this season, which makes the half-time/full-time double of Draw/Newcastle Jets at $5 the value play in this match.
Best bet- Draw/Newcastle Jets in half-time/full-time market at $5
Melbourne Victory versus Central Coast Mariners
Sunday, 18 January 2018 at 5.05pm AEDST at AAMI Park
Melbourne Victory host Central Coast in the final match of the round, with Victory fans crying out for some consistency from their team as we head towards finals.
A last start derby win had fans in raptures, but all too often this season, Melbourne have let themselves down with inconsistent play.
They start as $1.57 favourites against a Mariners team who are just three points shy of bottom place.
Central Coast start as $4.50 outsiders at Sportsbet, with the draw paying $3.75.
Victory have won three of their past five matches against Central Coast, but have drawn this season’s only two matches.
The last time the teams played was on a sweltering evening in Geelong, where the sides played out a 1-1 draw, with goals to Besart Berisha and Blake Powell.
With only four wins this season, two of which have come against Wellington, it is hard to mount a case for the Mariners in this one.
Central Coast are facing back-to-back roads games after a 3-1 loss to Perth, whereas Victory will have had an 11 day break.
Back the Victory in the handicap market at -1.0 at $2.70.
Best bet- Melbourne Victory -1.0 handicap betting at $2.70
