Melbourne Victory looking to end Central Coast’s winning streak

Sun, Feb 19, 12:33pm by Head Editor

Preview: A-League Round 20: Central Coast Mariners v Melbourne Victory

Date and Time: Sunday February 19, 5:00pm AEDT

Venue: Central Coast Stadium, Gosford

TV: Fox Sports

The Central Coast Mariners are one of the form teams in the A-League and are aiming for a fourth win in a row when they entertain second-placed Melbourne Victory in the last game of Round 20 on Sunday.

Despite this, the hosts are rank outsiders at $5.80, with the Victory at $1.53 and the draw at $4.33.

The Mariners come into this game on the back of a comprehensive 2-0 win over fellow finals contenders, the Wanderers last week, while Victory were held to a 0-0 draw with the Jets on Monday.

The Mariners were at the longest odds ($101) of any team in the pre-season but have put together a three-match winning streak, and if they can register a fourth on Sunday, they will end just outside the top six.

It’s been a remarkable change of fortunes for the Mariners over the last month, especially in their much-maligned defence, with Paul Okon’s side conceding just one goal over the last three weeks.

Their defence has been good but they have only faced one team in the top six over that period, this will be the toughest test they’ve faced over the past month.

Melbourne have only won one of their last five games, but can trim Sydney’s lead at the summit to eight points with a win here after the Sky Blues lost their first game of the season in the Sydney derby on Saturday night.

The visitors may be in a slump but such was their early to mid-season dominance, they are still six points clear of third-placed Brisbane. Keep an eye out for Marco Rojas to open the scoring at $5.50, he’s in superb touch.

Victory’s record is outstanding in this fixture, they’re unbeaten in their last 10 games against the Mariners and have averaged more than two goals a game in that period. I’m backing that run to continue.
