Melbourne Victory to defy poor record in Newcastle

Sun, Feb 12, 9:30am by Head Editor

Preview: A-League: Newcastle Jets v Melbourne Victory

Date and Time: Monday February 13, 7:50pm AEDT

Venue: McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

TV: Live on Fox Sports

Second-placed Melbourne Victory will be looking to overturn a horror record in Newcastle on Monday night when they play the Jets on Monday night after the FFA postponed the match from Saturday due to major heatwave conditions which hit the region.

Despite winning only three of sixteen games at this venue, Sportsbet has installed the Victory as a $1.85 favourite, with the hosts at $3.85. The draw is at $3.80.

The favourites come into this clash on the back of a 2-1 derby triumph over Melbourne City last week while the Jets dropped out of the top six following their 3-2 loss to Perth Glory.

Kevin Muscat’s men snapped a three-game losing run with a sensational, come from behind win over City last week and are once again primed to begin what looms as a seemingly impossible chase for competition leaders Sydney FC.

Marco Rojas has a great record in this fixture, scoring six goals in his last four games, along with three assists. His partners-in-crime, James Troisi and Besart Berisha are also in form and Newcastle’s defence will need to be better than they were last week, when they leaked three goals against Perth to slip outside the top six.

Mark Jones’ charges now face a tough run of three games that loom as a season-defining period for the Jets, after this contest, they meet the Mariners and Adelaide in their next two games – two sides currently languishing outside the six.

Ex-Victory man Andrew Nabbout has arguably been the buy of the season for Newcastle, and the flying winger will be determined to get himself on the scoresheet against his former club.

Wayne Brown and Steven Ugarkovic look set to make their return for the hosts and could be a pair of valuable inclusions. They’ll be expected to provide more opportunities for the likes of Andrew Hoole and Morten Nordstrand from the middle of the park.

Despite Victory’s poor record in the Hunter I’m taking them to exploit the Jets’ fragile defence, they did put four goals past them in round 13.
