Philadelphia Eagles opened as a $3 underdog when Sportsbet released their markets for Super Bowl 52 last Monday, but that quote was quickly snapped up by punters, which has seen them come into $2.70 to lift the Vince Lombardi trophy for the first time in franchise history.
Make no mistake, New England Patriots are still favoured to take out their third title in four years, but their price has drifted marginally, from the $1.44 they opened at, after squeezing past the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC title game, to $1.50.
Tom Brady was once again brilliant in that win over the Jaguars, and with more Super Bowl MVPs (4) than any other player, it’s no wonder he tops the market to make it five wins, at $1.62.
Brady’s counterpart Nick Foles is on the second line of betting in that market, at $4.50, after impressing since taking over from Carson Wentz, who went down with a season-ending injury in Week 14.
One man who’ll be as eager as anyone to lift the trophy is Rob Gronkowski, who was on injured reserve when the Patriots stormed back to beat the Falcons in last year’s decider. The New England tight end is the favourite to score the first touchdown, at $7.50, ahead of Eagle Zach Ertz, at $9.50.
The list of prop betting options seems almost endless, with Sportsbet offering more than 20 markets, including the length of the national anthem, whether there’ll be a “slip-up” or not, and even whether a streaker will take the pitch.
The anthem is $1.80 to be over 123.5 seconds, and $1.90 to be over, while if Pink makes a “slip-up”, by omitting a word, you’ll receive a $7 payout. A streaker to invade the pitch is at the odds of $34.
The Patriots are still the team to beat in Monday morning’s blockbuster, but punters are not predicting an easy win, with the line coming in from 6.5 to 4.5 points.
