There are seven games across four days in week three of the NBL and with every team notching up at least one win this season, there is an opportunity for every side to push up the standings early in the season.
Cairns Taipans versus Adelaide 36ers
Friday, 26 October 2018 at 7:50pm at Cairns Convention Centre, Cairns.
The Adelaide 36ers have continued their high-scoring ways of a year ago and have won two from their first four games this season.
Losses to Perth and Melbourne are nothing to be ashamed of for the 36ers, who will fancy their chances against Cairns on Friday night.
Adelaide is a $1.77 favourite to beat the Taipans, who are $2.05 home underdogs.
The starting handicap favours Adelaide by 1.5-points.
Travelling to the Snake Pit has been a challenge for most clubs in the NBL, but not the 37ers, who have won on three of their past four visits to Cairns.
The Taipans produced a flat performance in a loss to Illawarra last Sunday, failing to back up their surprise week one victory against Brisbane.
The 36ers beat Sydney behind a three-point shooting barrage last Friday and lost narrowly to Melbourne United on Sunday.
This is Adelaide’s first game of the weekend before they travel to New Zealand to play the Breakers on Sunday. Cairns faces the Sydney Kings on Sunday afternoon.
Cairns is just 6-6 at home in its past 12 games and given the lack of dominance they have had on their home court in recent times, this game provides the 36ers with a chance to win their third game of the season.
Best bet- Adelaide 36ers to cover 1.5-point handicap at $1.90.
Perth Wildcats versus Melbourne United
Saturday, 27 October 2018 at 3pm at Perth Arena, Perth
The showpiece game of week three actions sees the Perth Wildcats host Melbourne United in Perth.
The Wildcats have had an undefeated start to the season but will be playing their second game in three nights after travelling to play the Bullets on Thursday.
What impact that will have on the result of this game is unknown, but Perth are starting as $1.71 favourites for this clash on Saturday afternoon.
The intimidating fortress that is Perth Arena has not been as unrelenting for the visiting side in recent times, with Perth victorious in just seven of their past 13 matches at the venue.
Melbourne united had a hard fought win against Adelaide in week two after splitting their two games on the opening weekend. They are $2.15 underdogs to win this game.
Backing strong teams as underdogs has been profitable in the NBL and Melbourne United are an example of that, winning four of their past eight games as underdogs.
Perth will have less than two days to recover from their road game against Brisbane, as this is an early 3pm tip off in Perth.
That lack of recovery time will make all the difference in this one and it is United that find themselves in a strong position to make Perth suffer from some scheduling pressure.
Best bet- Melbourne United to win at $2.15.
New Zealand Breakers versus Adelaide 36ers
Sunday, 28 October 2018 at 12:20pm at Spark Arena, Auckland
The New Zealand Breakers are far from the force they were a few seasons ago if early play this season is an indication.
The Kiwi side struggled to a 101-78 loss to the Sydney Kings, failing to have enough defensive intensity to trouble a then winless Kings team.
New Zealand opens as $1.70 favourites to beat the Adelaide 36ers on Sunday, who are paying $2.15.
The 36ers have a good recent record against New Zealand, winning the past three times the teams have met.
Adelaide is not afraid of playing on the road either and kept it close against Melbourne United a week ago, covering the 5.50-point start.
They are 2.5-point underdogs in this one and will be playing their second match of the weekend after a game in Cairns on Friday night.
New Zealand has won just seven of its past 14 games as home favourite and lost in week one at home against Brisbane. Their home record is 0-2 this season.
We expect that to fall to 0-3 on Sunday, with the 36ers able to get buckets whenever they want. If the Breakers had trouble against the Kings, then they are set to struggle against one of the best attacking teams in the league.
Take the 36ers to win or at the handicap for some added insurance.
Best bet- Adelaide 36ers to win at $2.15.
