The 2018 NFL season is set to begin on Friday morning with the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Atlanta Falcons.
There are plenty of intriguing match ups in week one, including whether or not the Cleveland Browns can grab an elusive win after their 0-16 campaign in 2017.
Sunday Night Football features the Chicago Bears visit to Lambeau Field, while on Monday Night Football, there will be a double header, headlined by the Los Angeles Rams taking on the Oakland Raiders.
Atlanta Falcons at Philadelphia Eagles
Friday, 7 September 2018 at 10:20am AEST at Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia
The reigning Super Bowl champions traditionally host the opening game of the new season and the Eagles do the honours this season with a match against the Atlanta Falcons.
The Eagles are $1.75 to win the match, with Atlanta paying $2.13.
Philadelphia will be without quarter back Carson Wentz to open the season after he suffered an ACL injury in week 14 of the 2017 season He was on track to become the league’s MVP and his injury threatened to derail the Eagles’ season.
In stepped Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles, who led the team to its first Super Bowl in decades.
Atlanta was the best offensive team in football two seasons ago, but slipped considerably under Steve Sarkisian last season.
The Falcons went winless in pre-season and lost all four of their pre-season matches by double digits. Only one team has won the Super Bowl after finishing the pre-season winless all-time.
Plenty of points are expected in this match with the total match points set at over/under 45, with the over paying $1.94 and the under $1.90.
Philadelphia to win by 1-13 points is favoured in the margin markets at $2.66, with the Falcons to win by the same margin paying $2.89.
Matt Ryan will want to make a statement in this game after a lean 2017 season by his standards.
How will the Eagles play this season after breaking their Super Bowl drought a year ago is the biggest question surrounding them. They will be without top receiver Alshon Jeffrey who recently had shoulder surgery. We are giving the edge to Atlanta, who are 2.5-point underdogs.
Best bet- Atlanta Falcons Big Win Little Win 1-13 at $2.89
Tennessee Titans versus Miami Dolphins
Monday, 10 September 2018 at 3am AEST at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami
The Tennessee Titans made the post-season in 2017 and will be looking to improve even further as they begin their new campaign at Miami on Monday morning.
The home team is a $2.03 outsider at Sportsbet to win the match, with the Titans a $1.82 favourite.
Miami as a slight home underdog has proven lucrative recently, with the Dolphins 6-3-1 against the spread in its past 10 games as a home underdog; winning six of those games outright.
Tennessee has a poor record as a road favourite, covering just five times in 19 matches. The Titans have scored more than 20 points just once in their previous six games as a road favourite.
The Titans record against the AFC East is even worse, with the team only 1-7 head to head against the AFC East in its past eight games against the division and 1-7 against the spread in those matches.
They have scored more than 14 points against the AFC East only once in its past eight games.
While the AFC East seems to be the bogey of the Titans, covering as a home underdog is the Dolphins’ weakness. They are 2-7-1 against the spread as an underdog at all venues, allowing a whopping 29 points or more in five of those games.
The Dolphins possess a strong record against the AFC South, covering in six of its past nine games against the division, including last season against the Titans.
All of the statistics point to a tough start to the season for the Titans, with Marcus Mariota looking to guide them to the post-season for a second successive season.
In a competitive division, this is almost a must-win for Tennessee early in the season, but we are taking Miami and the points on the back of their strong record as underdogs.
Best bet- Miami Dolphins to cover 1-point handicap at $1.99
The Pittsburgh Steelers ($1.52) visit the Cleveland Browns ($2.60) in an AFC North divisional match on Monday morning, with the Steelers 3.5-point favourites.
Jacksonville ($1.58) is big road favourites at the New York Giants ($2.44) in cross-conference match up, with the Jags one game away from the Super Bowl last season.
