After four weeks of the 2017 National Football League season, only one team remains undefeated, the Kansas City Chiefs (4-0).
The New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers and Cleveland Browns all remain winless at 0-4, their playoff hopes fading with each passing game.
Last week, once again our best bets were profitable, achieving a 2-1 result for the fourth straight week.
A third quarter collapse by the Indianapolis Colts meant they were easy pickings for the savage Seattle Seahawks defense in Seattle on Monday morning in our only loss.
Here are our best bets for week five of the NFL:
New England Patriots at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Friday 6, October, 11:30am AEDST at Raymond James Stadium, Tampa.
The New England Patriots have been far from the clinical team we have become accustomed to over the past decade. New England’s inability to apply defensive pressure has caused them to leak big scores all season, particularly in their losses.
The Patriots defense is 31st in the league, giving up 32 points per game.
In their first Thursday night road game since 1990, the Patriots quarterback Tom Brady boasts an undefeated record against Tampa Bay (4-0), with Brady playing his first regular season game ever at Raymond James Stadium on Friday morning.
Tampa Bay are in the top half of the league in points per game and wide receiver Mike Evans has been lethal for the Bucs, scoring twice in three weeks.
Quarterback Jameis Winston won’t hesitate to throw the ball against a porous New England defense.
This game looks to be a shootout and despite the Patriots defensive vulnerability, they are second in the NFL for points scored per game at 32.3.
The Buccaneers are 5-point underdogs at home against the Patriots, despite New England being on the road and facing a short turnaround from last weekend’s game.
New England has not covered a 5-point spread as favourites all season, and the Buccaneers will cover at home.
Best bet: Tampa Bay Buccaneers to cover +5.0 handicap at $1.92 (Sportsbet)
Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles Rams
Monday, 9 October, 7:05am AEDST at LA Coliseum
Back-to-back road wins against the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys has placed the Los Angeles Rams in first place in the NFC West, ahead of the Seattle Seahawks, this weekends opponents.
The Seahawks were below their best in the first half against Indianapolis on Sunday Night Football, but bounced back with a monumental second-half to crush one of the worst team’s in football at the moment.
This match-up on Monday morning is crucial to the final makeup of the NFC West, although it is only week five.
The Seahawks defense is always talked about, but has failed to live up to expectations this season. On the flip side, the Rams offense was the biggest concern for the team this year, and it has fired game after game thus far.
The Rams have a 3-1 record against Seattle in their last four meetings, including a win last season at the LA Coliseum.
The result of this match-up for the Rams hinges on the output of Todd Gurley, who in his three career games against Seattle has only managed 172 yards at 3.3 yards per attempt.
As a slight home favourite, the LA Rams are enticing, particularly given Seattle’s recent struggles against them over the past few seasons.
Best bet: Los Angeles Rams to win at $1.86 (Sportsbet)
Green Bay Packers at Dallas Cowboys
Monday, 9 October, 7:25am AEDST at AT&T Stadium, Arlington
In week four, Green Bay dismantled a putrid Chicago Bears 35-14 on Thursday Night Football.
In a seesaw game, the Dallas Cowboys lost another home game, this time to the LA Rams, 35-30.
Last season, the Packers were blown out by the Cowboys at Lambeau Field, on their way to one of their best seasons in recent memory.
The defensive frailty of the Cowboys was on full display last weekend in their loss to the Rams.
Against an offense run by Aaron Rodgers who is potent at picking apart defenses, that spells bad news for Dallas this weekend.
Green Bay has had a host of defensive injuries to contend with over the past fortnight, but look to get a few of their defensive starters back for this match.
Looking to atone for last season’s loss, Green Bay should extend their winning streak to three games and move to 4-1 on the season.
Best bet: Green Bay Packers to win at $2.12 (Sportsbet)
