There are blockbusters galore in week 9 of the NFL, with Sunday Night Football pitting two of the greatest quarterbacks against one another when Green Bay plays New England.
Oakland Raiders at San Francisco 49ers
Friday, 2 November 2018 at 11:20am at Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara
Two teams with abysmal records meet on Thursday Night Football when neighbours San Francisco and Oakland play in Santa Clara.
The 49ers are 1-7 on the season but go into this match as $1.61 favourites.
The Raiders boast an unequally poor record at 1-6, with their lone win coming in overtime against Cleveland. They are $2.39 underdogs for this road game.
It feels like an age ago that the Oakland Raiders finished the 2016 season with a 12-4 record.
Since then things have gone from bad to worse for the silver and black. The hiring of coach Jon Gruden has done little to bring success to this franchise as they are among the worst teams in the NFL this season.
It is Oakland that has a 7-6 head-to-head advantage against the 49ers, but five of those games were played when the club was based in Los Angeles.
San Francisco lost its second game of the season to Arizona, this time going down 18-15 in Phoenix.
A nine-yard touchdown pass with 34 seconds to go by the Cardinals proved San Francisco’s undoing, as they relinquished a 15-3 lead in the fourth quarter.
It is difficult to back either team with confidence in this one, but we are being given a three-point start with Oakland and that’s value in a game between two struggling teams.
Best bet- Oakland Raiders to cover 3-point handicap at $1.91
Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens
Monday, 5 November at 5am at M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore
There is plenty at stake in Monday’s AFC North divisional clash between the Steelers and Ravens.
Baltimore has lost its last two games, while the Steelers have found form, winning three on the trot.
Baltimore enters this game as $1.71 favourites, with the Steelers priced as $2.19 underdogs.
The Ravens got the better of the Steelers in week four, winning 26-14 as three-point underdogs at Heinz Field.
The game was tied at 14 at half-time, but four Justin Tucker field goals in the second half proved to be the difference in that one.
The Steelers have struggled to cover in games against the Ravens recently, with just one cover in their past six meetings.
Backing total match points under has also proven lucrative in the past four seasons, with the under in Ravens and Steelers games in Baltimore at 4-0.
The Ravens looked lethargic in a 36-21 loss to Carolina in week eight. They will be hoping for a big effort in this one ahead of their week 10 bye.
Carolina scored on four straight drives last weekend against the league’s top defence, which has given up six touchdowns and four field goals on its last 13 full drives.
This should be a good bounce back opportunity for the Ravens and they won’t be short on motivation.
They are 5-1 in their past six against spread following a loss and should be able to shut down the Steelers’ one-dimensional offence.
Best bet- Baltimore Ravens to win at $1.71
Green Bay Packers at New England Patriots
Monday, 5 November 2018 at 12:20pm at Gilette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts
The stuff of football folklore is a match up between Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady and that is exactly what we have on Sunday Night Football this week.
This may be the last time these two legendary quarterbacks face off and has been one of the most anticipated regular season fixtures for some time.
It is New England who has won five in a row this season and are the $1.40 short-priced favourites to extend their winning streak.
The Packers are $3.05 outsiders and are travelling from the West Coast after a 29-27 loss to the undefeated Los Angeles Rams.
Green Bay played well against the Rams a week ago, but were left to lick their wounds in a match that may be the difference between them making the playoffs or not.
They now travel to Foxboro to play another Super Bowl contender in New England, who did what they had to in a 25-6 win against Buffalo on Monday Night Football.
New England scored its first defensive touchdown in 40 games on Monday, ending the longest drought in the NFL.
Both of these quarterbacks can put up big numbers and offence will be the flavour of the night.
Look for the Packers to keep this one relatively close just as they did last weekend against the Rams.
Best bet- Green Bay Packers to cover 5.5-point handicap at $1.91
