Round 10 of the NRL saw the Melbourne Storm instilled as favourites to win back to back Premierships. Although the biggest mover of the Round was South Sydney who succeeded in overcoming the high-flying St George Illawarra Dragons.
A blistering start from the Rabbitohs saw them race out into an early lead that they would never surrender to the Dragons. Despite a late revival, South Sydney were simply too good on the day for the leading side in the NRL. They were lifted by Sam Burgess’ return from suspension has he battled hard through the middle. The 24-10-win leaves them sitting 5th on the ladder as they moved from $13 to $9 to win the Grand Final.
Whilst the loss curtailed the Dragons fine start to the season, they remain top of the ladder after ten rounds of action. They will need to bounce back quickly though if they are to match their price of $5 to be Premiers.
The combination of that loss for St George and their own win over the Titans, means that the Storm moved into pole position with Sportsbet. The reigning Premiers have had an indifferent start to the year, but they are well and truly in the fight. Despite not being at their best against the Gold Coast, Melbourne still had too much for a battling Titans outfit. The Storm stand at $4.75 to win this season’s Grand Final.
Across the Tasman, the Roosters put on a clinical performance as they cruised past the Warriors. Early season form has been a concern for Sydney with inconsistency being a big trend in the opening rounds. None of that was evident has they romped home to a 32-0 away win in New Zealand. A five try haul saw them move from $7.50 to $6.50 to win the Premiership.
As for the Warriors they slipped to $12 from $11 following that defeat to the Roosters. With several injury concerns there will be fears that their bubble has burst after a brilliant start to the year. They suffered a similarly demoralising defeat to the Storm a few Rounds ago and managed to regroup, although this will be a huge test.
Penrith moved to $10 from $12 with their victory over the Newcastle Knights. James Maloney was the difference on the night as his kicking at goal proved to vital in the 29-18 win. The Knights struggled to handle the Panthers and unforced errors gifted Penrith several tries. It was a disappointing performance for Newcastle as they slipped further off the pace.
