St George solidified their Premiership credentials for 2018 with a resounding victory over the reigning Premiers. Round 9 also offered up hope for North Queensland as they gained a much-needed win away from home whilst across the board there was tight games throughout the weekend.
For the Dragons it was the indiscipline of the Storm and the boot of Gareth Widdop that got them across the line. The Englishman added five penalties to the teams four tries as well hitting all his conversions. With the Storm scoring three tries, his accuracy proved to be what gave his side such a comfortable winning margin. This matchup could well be seen again when the Grand Final rolls around as the Dragons stand as favourites at $4.50 and the Storm at $5.
The Roosters bounced back from their defeat at the hands of the Dragons in Round 8, as they edged their way past Manly. A missed conversion attempt from the Sea Eagles, Daly Cherry-Evans proved to be the difference in a 22-20 win for Sydney. The Roosters boosted their hopes for this season as they moved to 3-2 in their last five games as they look to remove the inconsistencies from their performances. They stand at $7.50.
Redemption was also on the cards for the New Zealand Warriors after their dismal showing in the Anzac Day with Melbourne. They rallied in Round 9 to put Wests to the sword as they romped home 26-4. The Warriors ran in five tries to the Tigers one as they put on a display of their attacking prowess. It came at a cost, however, as injuries to key trio Shaun Johnson, Issac Luke and Adam Blair, dampened the post-game celebrations. They remain 2nd on the ladder priced at $11.
Johnathan Thurston’s goal kicking proved to be the difference on Friday night as the Cowboys overcame a dogged Penrith Panthers. North Queensland were in dire need of a win having only previously won two games this season, despite being amongst the pre-season favourites. The win moved them up to 12th on the ladder and outside hopefuls at $13. Whilst the loss will have dented Penrith’s momentum, they continue to be in contention for the Premiership at $12.
Cronulla battled to a win over Parramatta with goal kicking accuracy again a key factor in the win. This time a miss from Mitchell Moses from the sideline after the siren gifted the Sharks victory. The Eels were never truly in this game but ran in three tries in the last five minutes to pile the pressure on Cronulla. They stand at $13 to win the Grand Final.
