NRL Round 5 2018: Preview and Best Bets

Wed, Apr 4, 11:40am by Staff Writer

Only two teams remain unbeaten at this stage of the season and arguably it is two clubs that many would not have expected. The New Zealand Warriors and St George Illawarra Dragons will put their records on the line again whilst the stand out match of the Round sees a repeat of Round 2 with Wests taking on the Storm.

St George Illawarra Dragons v South Sydney Rabbitohs

Friday 6th April, 7.50pm, Jubilee Oval

The task for the Rabbitohs has got significantly more difficult with Sam Burgess being handed a two-game ban for his raised elbow in their last match. With their talisman gone from the pack it is hard to see South Sydney seriously challenging the Dragons at $3.20. The Good Friday comeback win for the Bunnies, however, will have boosted confidence throughout the squad.

At $1.35 the Dragons are clear favourites for this match but will be wary of complacency as they look to maintain their impressive start. It is in the halves where they have impressed most with Ben Hunt and Gareth Widdop directing around a powerful pack and dangerous back line.

Bet of the Match – St George to Win by 13+ points at $2.20

Wests Tigers v Melbourne Storm

Saturday 7th April, 3pm, Mt Smart Stadium

Wests have taken one of their homes games across the ditch to take on the Melbourne Storm in Auckland in a double header. Following their Round 2 victory over the Storm, the Tigers will believe they have the capability to do so again. That was a hard fought extremely close two-point victory but showed in Monday’s destruction of Parramatta the attacking threat that they possess. At $2.85 they will need to produce a performance equal to or better than Round 2.

The Storm have had a surprisingly poor start to the season registering just the two wins from four games. Last weekend’s loss to Cronulla compounded their struggles when teams take the game to them up front. They will be looking to bounce back and gain some revenge over the Tigers and look set to do so at $1.42.

Bet of the Match – Melbourne to Win by 1-12 points at $3

New Zealand Warriors v Nth Queensland Cowboys

Saturday 7th April, 5.30pm, Mt Smart Stadium

The culmination of the double header will see the Warriors take on the Cowboys. With a 100% record the Warriors are certain to have a huge crowd at Mt Smart Stadium. Their emphatic victory of the Roosters in Round 4 was impressive especially considering they did it without Shaun Johnson. He returns this weekend but his side stand at $1.95 compared to the Cowboys at $1.87.

With just a solitary win so far this season, North Queensland are in need of confidence boosting victory this kick start their year. The return of Johnathan Thurston from injury was meant to spark the Cowboys attack but they have struggled so far to fire.

Bet of the Match – New Zealand to Win by 1-12 points at $3.30
