NRL Round 5: Best Bets – Options abound in clear-cut NRL round

Wed, Mar 29, 9:28am by Staff Writer

Round Five of the NRL is set to kick off this Thursday. Let’s take a look at the best bets of the Round.

Roosters v Sea Eagles, Friday March 31, Allianz Stadium, 6pm AEDT

After a disappointing 2016, the Sydney Roosters are back with a vengeance this year. They are four from four after the opening Rounds and looking like title Premiership contenders. They host Manly on Friday Night Footy as they aim to continue their 100% winning start. While the form of the entire side has guided them to those victories, one stand out has been Michael Gordon, who has brought a reassuring hand to the full back position for the Roosters. They head in to this fixture as favourites with William Hill at $1.42 while Manly stand at $2.85. The Sea Eagles lost their opening two fixtures of the year but have had their own mini revival to match that of the Roosters. With two massively impressive victories over the Cowboys and Bulldogs. They may head into this as underdogs but they certainly have a chance to cause an upset.

Bet of the Match: Manly to Win by 1-12 points at $4.00

Cowboys v Rabbitohs, Friday March 31, 1300Smilles Stadium, 8pm AEDT

South Sydney will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of losing to the Roosters in the last round. Whilst the loss will have hurt, it was the performance that cut deepest. The Rabbitohs looked devoid of ideas in the halves and struggled to match the Roosters at all. Things don’t get any easier for them as they make the trip north to face the Cowboys. South Sydney head into the fixture well off the pace at $3.70. North Queensland, however, stand at $1.28 and will be confident of matching that. The Cowboys will feel they have something to prove to the home crowd after their dismal 30-8 thrashing by the Sea Eagles in their last home fixture. A close win away against the Titans will has put them back on winning ways and they will be looking to make a statement against the Rabbitohs.

Bet of the Match: North Queensland to Win by 13+ points at $2.10

Raiders v Eels, Saturday April 1, GIO Stadium, 5:30pm AEDT

Both the Eels and Raiders would not have wanted to be in their current position on the ladder at the start of the year. They each had much higher expectations for 2017 and will need to take a step in the right direction as they face each other. With the Eels in 9th and Raiders in 11th, Parramatta may have only the one extra win over their opponents but both come into this fixture on the back of losses in Round Four. Canberra battled all the way against the Broncos before going down to a late drop goal while the Eels succumbed to the Sharks. William Hill gives the edge to the home side, with the Raiders at $1.40 in contrast to the Eels priced at $2.95. Despite the odds this is a tough one to call with neither side being in any real form.
