The NRL season kicked off on Thursday night, when the Broncos spoiled the Sharks first hit-out as Premiers with a 26-18 win at Shark Park.
Wayne Bennett’s men actually started favourites for the match, at $1.80, as the Broncos were one of five favourites to salute in round one.
Last season’s runners-up, the Storm, held on for a gritty 12-6 win against the Bulldogs at a wet Belmore Oval. The visitors scored two tries in the opening six minutes but couldn’t cross the line again, as the Dogs threw everything at them.
Robbie Farah’s first match in South Sydney colours didn’t end well, as his new side lost 34-18 to the club he ran out for 247 times, Wests Tigers. The biggest talking point to come out of this match was the injury to Souths fullback, Greg Inglis.
The Australian and Queensland representative has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and looks set to miss the entire season, the Kangaroos do have a world cup coming up at the end of October, so that may now be his focus.
The biggest upset of the round was the Dragons’ 42-10 belting of the Panthers. Penrith went into the contest as $1.40 favourites, but were completely outplayed by a committed, Red V outfit.
Knights fans would be happy about their start to the season, they were just seven minutes away from an almighty upset in Auckland against the Warriors. Last year’s wooden spooners eventually went down 26-22, their 19th consecutive loss.
We made a winning start with our best bets, as both the Storm ($1.90) & Cowboys ($3), saluted by a margin of 1-12 points. We did take Cronulla though, who couldn’t get it done.
Round two is highlighted by the Queensland derby on Friday night, these contests have been must-see entertainment over the past few years, including arguably the best Grand Final ever in 2015, when the Cowboys beat the Broncos in golden point extra time, 17-16.
