Panthers’ last big chance to keep NFL playoff chances alive

Wed, Nov 16, 3:24pm by Head Editor

Preview: NFL Week Eleven: New Orleans Saints @ Carolina Panthers

Date and Time: Friday November 18, 12:25pm AEDT

Venue:  Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte,

TV: Live on ESPN

The Saints head to Carolina on Thursday Night (Friday AEDT) for the latest edition of a bitter NFC South division rivalry. Both teams are in need of a win, especially the Panthers, who have started the season extremely poorly, falling to 3-6. New Orleans is sitting at 4-5 but both teams are behind the Atlanta Falcons (6-4).

Despite their poor record, the home team is favourites with Sportsbet at $1.55. The Saints are at $2.53 and the line is just over a field goal at 3.5 points.

WATCH: Oddsshark’s Preview the Saints v Panthers

This is the absolute last chance for Carolina this season if they want to make the playoffs. Cam Newton and the Panthers were the best team in the NFC last season and were expected to compete for a Super Bowl appearance again this year but have been a skeleton of the team we saw nine months ago.

For the visitors, Drew Brees is playing at an elite level this season and has kept the Saints in the playoff picture. They are on the outside looking in right now, but they have come through with some big wins. If the New Orleans’ defence can step up this week then they can give the Panthers a run for their money.

The defence that Brees will be coming up against is much improved over the past three weeks. They’ve surrendered just under 17 points per game in that period but that doesn’t tell the full story.

The team has had 15 sacks during that span, which is more than three teams have on the entire season. The Chiefs only totalled 256 yards of offence in their win over the Panthers on Sunday and Carolina haven’t allowed any running back to rush for more than 61 yards since Week Five.

Carolina’s offence isn’t what it was a year ago, but Newton and company shouldn’t have much trouble moving the ball against the Saints. New Orleans rank 30th by allowing almost 30 points per contest. With their season on the line, I’m backing the Panthers to win.
