Patriots $7 favourites to repeat Superbowl success in 2018

Thu, Feb 9, 5:48pm by Head Editor

As we catch our breath from what was an amazing Super Bowl, just a quick reminder that it’s only 360 days until next year’s showpiece event in Minnesota.

In sport, we are always looking ahead and Sportsbet released the odds for Super Bowl 52, just 48 hours after Super Bowl 51 has been won by New England, which many of us, are still trying to make sense of.

Anyway, onto the odds for next season and unsurprisingly, the Patriots are $7 favourites and who’s to say they can’t make it seven in 17 years. Not me.

They are well-positioned for the future with an excellent mix of talented veterans and rising youth. Additionally, there’s plenty of salary cap space (an estimated $65 million) to sign key in-house free agents such as Dont’a Hightower and Malcolm Butler. They could even spend some of that money on getting new players in.

Plus, there’s a bounty of draft picks (at least seven with compensatory picks announced in March) to further enhance the roster. So, is there any point going through the rest of the teams? Well, there hasn’t been a back-to-back Super Bowl Champion for over a decade but it was the Patriots who achieved it, in 2004/05.

The Green Bay Packers are next in line at $10 after they fell (44-21) in the penultimate round, the NFC Championship game to the Falcons.

Another team who fell to the Falcons in the post-season are the Seattle Seahawks, who are just a dollar back at $11. They were one of the few teams to beat the Patriots this season.

Atlanta are at $12 to go one better than last season, but they’ll have to do it without offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who has been appointed head coach of the 49ers, an outfit who are all the way down the bottom of betting, equal last with the Browns at $201. Good luck Coach.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are also at $12, Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger should be getting Martavis Bryant back this season and will have Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell at his disposal again.

The third team at $12 are the Dallas Cowboys, who will still be stinging from their heartbreaking loss to the Packers in the Divisional Playoffs after a brilliant regular season led by quarterback Dak Prescott.

The Chargers’ move from San Diego up the highway to LA hasn’t changed their chances of success according to the bookmakers, they’re a $51 chance.
