Saturday is day two of Randwick’s three-day spring carnival with the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) the feature event. The rail is out three-metres and the track in the good range.
A field of ten have accepted for the Spring Champion Stakes with Ace High ($3.50) opening as the favourite. The David Payne-trained colt broke his maiden status when first-up this campaign and then jumped to favouritism for this race after a last start 1.3L win in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m).
Sanctioned ($4.40) – who’s drawn widest in barrier ten – was second in the Gloaming with three placings to his name this preparation. Stable mate Astoria ($7.50) was a winner of the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle before a fifth in the Gloaming while Coral Coast ($16) and Sully ($8) finished third and fourth respectively behind Ace High and Sanctioned.
Dissolution ($10) and Tangled ($5.50) caught the eye when flashing home behind Ataraxia in the Listed Dulcify (1600m) last week and are on the back up here.
The Ron Quinton duo of Dixie Blossoms ($4.40) and Daysee Doom ($4.60) are fighting out favouritism in the Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m) for mares. They ran the quinella last start in the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) with ‘Daysee’ coming out the victor on that occasion although she’s drawn wide in barrier 14 on Saturday, ‘Dixie’ is in barrier six.
Dawn Wall ($7) let the punters down last start when heavily backed in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m). She ended up running fifth – beaten nearly 5L – to Washington Heights after an eye-catching second to him before that.
My True Love ($8.50) is second-up and racing consistently with a win and four placings from her last five starts while it’s a similar story with Imposing Lass ($9.50) who has a win and four placings from her last six starts. Stable mate to My True Love, Savapinksi ($12) is off two strong provincial wins. Hetty Heights ($16) ran third to Zanbagh in the Group 3 Tibbie (1400m) and has finished a length from the winner at her last five runs. Perfect Rhyme ($15) was second in the Tibbie and was well supported last week when seventh of nine in the Group 2 Hill Stakes (1800m) while Zenalicious ($11) worked home impressively when fifth to Daysee and Dixie at her most recent run, beaten 2L.
A small field of eight have accepted in the Group 2 Roman Consul (1200m) with the unbeaten Viridine ($2.90) holding early favouritism. He’s won all three of his career starts and comes into Saturday off a last start victory over Single Bullet ($4) and Albumin ($9) who also line up here. Stable mate to the favourite, Beau Geste ($6.50) is also off a last start win – a BM74 victory at Rosehill. Snitzkraft ($8.50) is down from Queensland and off a last start Ipswich win as well while Chauffeur ($5) could run in Melbourne instead and wherever he runs this weekend will determine whether he goes on a Caulfield Guineas or Coolmore path.
Suggested Bet: Dixie Blossoms and Daysee Doom look hard to beat in the Angst Stakes but going with Interlocuter ($2.40, Race 3, number 3). He’s a lightly raced five-year-old entire for Godolphin who’s only had the six career starts for three wins and two placings. He’s second-up after being heavily supported when fresh and going down to Wayanka by 0.2L and in a race with limited chances, he should be hard to hold out on Saturday.
