As expected, the Week 7 Monday Night clash between the Giants and Vikings was not one for the highlight’s reel. But fans who are planning on hanging around for this week’s final match should be in for a much better show, as the 6-1 Seahawks visit the 3-4 Rams.
It mightn’t be the most evenly matched battle of the week with Seattle starting as 10.5-point favourites, but it should still be somewhat of a test for the Seahawks’ defence, and it’s a chance for all to see just how impressive Seattle is away from home. While it would be a major upset if the Rams were to get up, they can certainly put up a fight and make things interesting.
While the Seahawks have become best known for their outstanding defence, they’re not exactly slouches on the offensive side, either. Russell Wilson has developed in to a solid, dependable quarterback. He’s not as flashy as RGIII or as skilled a passer as Andrew Luck, but he has been steady at the helm of the Seattle Ship in his first two years. Once again, he’s off to a good start in his sophomore season, throwing for 11 touchdown passes and only four interceptions. He’s been aided by the fact Seattle is often playing from in front, and that hands over a lot of the workload to Marshawn Lynch and the rest of the Seattle running backs who have performed extremely well.
On the other side of the coin, St. Louis has a much more one-dimensional attack. While Zac Stacy has shown some promise as a strong running back, the pressure is all on quarterback Sam Bradford, who has put up some big numbers even with his team struggling with overall consistency. Bradford has thrown for 14 touchdowns and is always a major threat to the opposition, which could be enough to keep the vaunted Seattle secondary on their toes.
The Rams haven’t had much success against the higher ranked teams they’ve played this year (their wins have come against Jacksonville, Houston and Arizona), and Seattle’s only loss – at Indianapolis – isn’t anything to be ashamed of. Put those two resumes together, and it’s hard to see the Seahawks letting this one slip on Monday night (our Tuesday morning).
The more pressing question we think should be asked is whether the Seahawks can cover the spread. I’ve generally backed the favourites this year to cover the line, as the handful of elite teams have shown they are a class above the rest of the sides in the league. But in this case, I think Bradford and his squad can score a sufficient amount of points to keep Seattle from running away with the game. It won’t be enough to save the Rams, but it should be enough to keep the margin within 11 points.
Prediction: Seattle 24, St. Louis 16.
