Spieth at $8.50 to achieve career Grand Slam at PGA Championship

Mon, Jul 24, 1:30pm by Head Editor

Jordan Spieth became the second man in history to win three of the four Grand Slams before his 24th birthday, after he saluted for his maiden British Open crown at Royal Birkdale on Monday morning Australian time.

The 23-year-old joins the legendary Jack Nicklaus, who achieved the feat in 1963. He is now on the third line of betting at $8.50 to join Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan as only the sixth player to win all four majors, when he tees it up at next month’s USPGA Championship.

The Texan secured the three-stroke win with a par on the last hole, which is the same lead that he started the final round with, but that doesn’t tell the dramatic story.

His buffer was gone on the front nine, after he made four bogies, and he was level with compatriot Matt Kuchar at the turn, and a meltdown like the Masters last year was on the cards.

The back nine was also filled with drama, including an incident-packed 13th hole, when he made another bogey after having to take a drop for an unplayable lie, which gave Kuchar the lead.

I’m not sure what he was thinking on the walk to the 14th tee, but he then went on a birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie run over the next four holes which saw him regain his tournament lead.

He was composed on the 18th green, which ensured he would be flying across the Atlantic with the Claret Jug.

Marc Leishman was the best of the Aussies, finishing with a superb final round of 65, he was eight shots off the pace, in a tie for sixth place. You can get $91 for the 33-year-old Victorian to break his major duck at the USPGA.

Rory McIlroy is a $7.50 favourite to take out the PGA for the third time since 2012, ahead of world number one Dustin Johnson, at $8. The fourth and final major of the year, the USPGA Championship, tees off on the 10th of August at the Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina.
