England v Australia, Sunday 19th November, Twickenham, 2am AEDT
As ever the week before a Test between Australia and England, there has been shots fired from both camps. Although England have taken a different angle this time, talking up the qualities that the Wallabies hold. A diversionary tactic for sure as these two great rugby nations head into battle once again.
A 13th straight victory over Wales in Cardiff last weekend was the perfect way for the Wallabies to prepare for this clash. They are now on a seven-game unbeaten streak including their huge win over the All Blacks. Although that win came in a dead rubber, it has signalled a turning point in Australia’s confidence. All the progress since then could come crashing down at Twickenham this weekend if they can’t match the intensity of the hosts.
The Wallabies are off the pace priced at $3.35 but have the ability to spring a surprise here. The quality in the backs could be a real threat to the English if the forwards are able to muscle up. This is likely to be a game decided up front with the two packs battling for supremacy.
Eddie Jones has turned this England side around incredibly since their 2015 Rugby World Cup humiliation. They have lost just one Test in the last two years, that against an Ireland side in Dublin intent on spoiling a Six Nations Grand Slam for England. In that time England have won four against the Wallabies including a whitewash tour down under in 2016. A feat never previously achieved by an English side.
They kicked off their November Tests in rusty fashion against Argentina, grinding their way to victory. Due to the British and Irish Lions Tour to New Zealand, England have not had first choice of their best players since the Six Nations in March. The likely return of Maro Itoje and Owen Farrell after being rested last week will be a huge boost. They are favourites to win at $1.33.
Historically these matches are tense close fought wins for either nation, however, there has been some exceptions. When Australia ran riot at the last World Cup with a 33-13 win. A repeat of that margin of 13+ points for the Wallabies is priced at $10, whilst the same margin for an English victory stands at $2.37. That big win for the hosts is favourite with a margin of 1-12 points for England at $2.63 with the same for Australia at $3.75. The Wallabies have had two draws already this year, both with South Africa, that result is at $23.
Both sides will be looking for a positive start to the game and will be aiming to score early. England stand at $1.37 to score the first try with Australia at $2.83. For no try to be scored the price is $66. An unlikely scenario although England have been known to like a kicking game in the past.
