Stars head West to face the Scorchers for a spot in the Big Final

Mon, Jan 23, 12:30pm by Head Editor

Preview: Big Bash Semi Final – Perth Scorchers v Melbourne Stars

Date and Time: Tuesday January 24, 7:40pm AEDT

Venue: WACA, Perth

TV: Channel Ten

The Melbourne Stars blew their chances of hosting this semi-final by losing their last two home and away games to the Heat and the Sixers respectively. The team waiting for them after their four-hour flight had no such late-season trouble, their seven-wicket win over Hobart on Saturday earning them top spot and a home final.

Sportsbet has the Scorchers as $1.70 favourites with the Stars at $2.15 to clinch their second consecutive Grand Final berth.

David Hussey’s team enjoyed a seven-wicket win in Perth a week ago, when the Scorchers slipped to 4-13 in the fourth over and never recovered. Spinner Michael Beer (2-12 off four overs) was instrumental in the win.

The visitors will need to improve after poor bowling at the death and sluggish batting against Sydney Sixers on Saturday if they are to match that performance.

The Sydneysiders were 6-97 chasing 156 before all-rounder Shaun Abbott (33) and Johan Botha (25) launched the winning rearguard action.

Perth needed a big win over the Hurricanes to leapfrog the Heat into first on Saturday and that’s exactly what they got. The BBL’s most successful club hit form at the right time, hammering Hobart and marching into the finals with a serious warning to the rest of the competition.

Mitchell Johnson lead the way with the ball, taking 2-15 from four overs to set up the contest for the visitors. Hobart could only manage 6-134, the job had to be done inside 15.4 overs. The suddenly red-hot Scorchers managed that with 11 balls still up their sleeve.

Interestingly, playing at home has proven to be a disadvantage this season, with just 11 home teams winning in the 32 regular season games. Adding to the cause of the visiting team here will be the return of Marcus Stoinis from international duty.

This is a meeting of the two most consistently performing teams in the history of Big Bash Cricket. For the sixth year in a row both the Melbourne Stars and the Perth Scorchers have made it to the semifinals and for the sixth year in a row, one of these teams will qualify for the final.

The WACA which has been a happy hunting ground for the home team of the Scorchers over the years, but it was also the ground where the Stars got one over them on the 14th of January.

The Scorchers and their Australian Test opener Shaun Marsh have hit form at the right time for the finals and will be hard to beat at home besides the recent trend of home teams losing. Marsh is $4 to top score for the Scorchers.

Marsh was named man of the match in Saturday’s win after making 57 off just 34 balls. The Stars have been incredibly unpredictable and have lost several key players to international duty. Melbourne looked poor in their match against Sydney and I can’t see them turning it around here.

Suggested Bet: Scorchers to win: $1.70
