Super Rugby Market Update: Waratahs set points record

Tue, Jul 10, 10:48am by Staff Writer

The New South Wales Waratahs set a record for the most number of points and tries in a game in team history with a 77-25 thumping of the Sunwolves on Saturday night.

The win has moved the Tahs to third favourites to win Super Rugby at $11 and winners of the Australian conference.

A red card just before half time to Semisi Masiwera changed the game for the visitors, who were in the match in the first half.

Eight second half tries to one showed the Tahs might on the attacking side of the game as they romped to victory.

The Melbourne Rebels will need to beat the Highlanders next weekend and hope the Sharks lose to the Jaguares if they are to play finals.

The Rebels are $201 to win Super Rugby at Sportsbet and will be disappointed to have lost a winnable game against the Reds 37-23 on Friday night.

After leading 17-10 in the first half, the Rebels were clearly second best. The Reds controlled the second half and earned a deserved victory.

On Friday night it was another dominant win for the competition favourites the Crusaders. They defeated South Island rivals the Highlanders 45-22 in Christchurch.

The Crusaders are $1.67 favourites to win the title. The Highlanders have been disappointing in the past fortnight and are $14 to win Super Rugby at Sportsbet.

In Waikato, the Chiefs held off a brave Brumbies side to record a 24-19 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Two Brumbies tries in the final 10 minutes set up a grandstand finish, but the Chiefs managed to hold on.

They are now third in the New Zealand conference and $12 to win the title.

The Hurricanes put a bad month of rugby behind them to register a 42-24 win against the Blues on Saturday night.

The home side were more decisive with ball in hand, despite the Blues creating plenty of opportunities themselves.

The Canes were competition favourites for much of the season, but find themselves at $4 and second favourites to win Super Rugby.

The Jaguares have qualified for their first finals campaign in team history, but are only a slim chance of topping the South African conference.

In a high scoring match in Pretoria, the visitors got off to a flying start, leading 19-0 in the first half. The Bulls pegged them back in the second stanza and won 43-34.

The Jaguares are $21 to win Super Rugby and will hold no fears of travelling to Australia and New Zealand, as they were 4-0 during the regular season in those matches.

The Stormers 27-16 win against the Sharks in Cape Town means that the Sharks must win their round 19 home game against the Jaguares if they hope to feature in the finals.

It was a close match throughout, but the Stormers three tries to one were the difference in the match.

The Lions had a bye this week and are $13 to win the title. They are three points ahead of the Jaguares in the South African conference and a win against the Bulls next week will mean they finish atop the South African conference for a third year in a row.
