It’s something that we’ve all known for many weeks, but on Saturday night, when the final whistle went at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, the 1-0 win to the hosts over second-placed Melbourne Victory confirmed that Sydney FC are Premiers this season.
A wonder strike from Roar striker Jamie Maclaren was the difference between the two sides, with the former Socceroo lobbing a shot over Victory keeper Lawrence Thomas.
The 1-0 win over a depleted Melbourne team who were without arguably their best three players – Marco Rojas, Besart Berisha and James Troisi – who were all on International duty, ended the Victorian club’s quest to deny the Sky Blues of their second Premiership in the history of the A-League.
They are still very much a chance for the Championship though, and despite the loss, are still rated a $3.25 chance of winning that crown. Brisbane moved in $13 to $11 on the back of their second win in three weeks.
The newly crowned Premiers then travelled to Perth for the final match of the round on Sunday and celebrated their new piece of silverware by beating the Glory by three goals to nil.
The Premiers Brazilian striker Bobo capped off the performance by netting his 12th goal and giving the Sky Blues a 3-0 lead. The win sees them move into $2 for the Championship.
The win was Sydney’s third from as many games against the Glory this campaign and has put a major dent in the hosts aspirations of a top-four finish. The Glory Championship odds remained at $13 but they are now sit just one point ahead of the Wanderers in fifth place.
Speaking of the Wanderers, they put on one of the best displays of any this round, beating City 3-1 at home on Friday night.
The result all but seals a place in the finals for Western Sydney, who move five points clear of Wellington in the sixth and last finals spot. The odds for last season’s runners-up going one better this year were also slashed following the comfortable win, coming in from $21 to $13.
The Phoenix haven’t given up on displacing the Wanderers and sneaking into the top six though, and showed that by banging five goals past a hapless Jets outfit.
Elsewhere, Adelaide jumped off the bottom of the ladder with a 3-2 win over the Mariners, who are now the favourites for the wooden spoon at $1.80.
