IT’S been a very sad week in football.
Not because our multi failed at the final hurdle last week, but because we won’t see the greatest player in the game again in 2014.
Gary Ablett – the little master.
The shortest-priced favourite in the history of Brownlow betting has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after electing to have shoulder surgery = he has gone from $1.80 to $8 following the news, leaving the Brownlow market in chaos and Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury as the new favourite for the league’s best and fairest award.
There are a number of experts who believe that Ablett’s form was so good early in the year that he may win, despite missing the last six games, but history tells us that no player has ever won after missing more than four weeks in one season.
Whatever happens from here, you can bet that Brownlow night in September will now be a lot more dramatic.
Enough about Ablett, it’s time to pick some winners for Round 17 and earn ourselves some nice play money over the weekend.
Remember, we’re now using the new Sportsbet multi-betting tool, which makes putting a multi on through AustralianGambling an absolute breeze. If you’re a member of Sportsbet, you can place your bet without even leaving this very page!
If you haven’t used the tool before, you can read the instructions on how to use it here.
Now, time to find a few winners.
Tip: Hawthorn over 6.5 points against Adelaide, paying $1.92 at Sportsbet
The reigning premiers conceded top spot with their shock defeat to North Melbourne last week, losing Brad Sewell (hamstring) and Brian Lake (suspension) in the process. Adelaide, meanwhile, continues to linger on the fringe of the eight, and a win here would be a big boost in the Crows’ tussle with Essendon and Gold Coast for a finals berth. Last week’s performance and a growing injury list have seen the Hawks’ odds drift out, but they should be good enough to win by at least 7 points here – especially with the lingering fitness concerns around Adelaide star Patrick Dangerfield.
Tip: Gold Coast to win, paying $1.55 with Sportsbet.com.au
The loss of Gary Ablett to his shoulder injury is immensely disappointing for Suns fans, but it won’t change the fact that the Suns had ripper form last week that will drive the talented team to soldier on without their skipper and prove they can do the job without Gaz. The Suns easily thrashed the Dogs back in Round 10 – and rising stars like Dion Prestia, Tom Lynch, Jaeger O’Meara, and David Swallow will eagerly fill the void and hold their momentum in the warmer climate of Cazaly’s Stadium – a venue they already have a great track record in.
Tip: Sydney to hold the -37.5 line against Carlton, paying $1.92 at Sportsbet
Carlton coach Mick Malthouse came out during the week and called Sydney the “Strongest playing list he had ever seen in his 45 years in football.” – we tend to agree. Armed with some extra money in the cap, the Swans were able to recruit Lance Franklin to go with an already-strong list and have now won 11 games in a row to take top spot on the ladder and premiership favouritism. We think the 37-point line being handed to the Blues is way under the mark and expect the Swans to crunch them.
Tip: Collingwood to cover the 11.5 line at Sportsbet, paying @ $1.92
Collingwood is still stinging after its disappointing loss to the injury-hit Gold Coast Suns and will come out fired up. Essendon has lost Brendon Goddard to suspension which will heap further pressure on young star Dyson Heppell who has stood tall in the absence of Jobe Watson. The Magpies look to have far too much talent in the midfield for the troubled Dons and should easily cover the 11.5 line.
