UEFA Champions League Matchday 3: Preview and Best Bets

Tue, Oct 23, 10:23am by Staff Writer

The UEFA Champions League is back this week with matchday three fixtures on both Wednesday and Thursday morning (AEDST).

Manchester United versus Juventus

Wednesday, 24 October 2018 at 5am at Old Trafford

One of the most anticipated Champions League matches of the group stage takes place on Wednesday morning when Manchester United hosts Juventus.

The Red Devils will welcome back former player Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford in a pivotal group stage games.

United is priced as a $3.25 underdog to win the match, with Juventus the $2.40 favourites.

The draw is priced at $3.30.

It has been a turbulent start to the new season for United coach Jose Mourinho, but his side restored some credibility with a 2-2 draw against Chelsea in the English Premier League.

United conceded a 96th minute equaliser to Chelsea when they looked set for back-to-back wins for the first time this season. They instead had to settle for just a point and have won one of their past six matches. They are 10th on the league table.

After being shown a straight red card in his Champions League opener against Valencia, there was doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo would feature in this match.

A disciplinary panel overturned the three match ban and he is available for Wednesday’s game against his former club.

The superstar has scored 455 goals in 448 matches across all competitions.

Juventus is in a rich vein of form to start the new Serie A season and dropped its first points just last weekend in a 1-1 draw against Genoa.

They are undefeated in their last five European away games and have won four of those matches.

This is the first time the clubs will meet since 2003, when United were 3-0 winners in Turin.

All-time the clubs have notched five wins apiece against one another.

Despite showing recent improvement, it is tough to back Manchester United against one of the continent’s elite teams. Juventus is among the favourites to win the Champions League and should take care of business on Wednesday.

Best bet- Juventus to win at $2.40.

PSV versus Tottenham

Thursday, 25 October 2018 at 2:55am at Philips Stadion, Eindhoven

It is crunch time for both PSV and Tottenham when the two teams square off in Holland on Thursday.

Tottenham is a $2 favourite to win the match, with the hosts priced at $3.80.

It has been a tough campaign for both teams so far as they have yet to get a win in two starts.

Tottenham suffered late heartbreak in Milan when it conceded twice in the dying moments to lose 2-1 to Inter Milan.

A 4-2 loss at Wembley in their last Champions League game against Barcelona leaves the Spurs with plenty of work to do if they want to progress past the group stages.

PSV Eindhoven is in a similar position and is at the bottom of group B. They started with a 4-0 loss against Barcelona at Camp Nou and a 2-1 defeat against Inter at home a fortnight ago.

The teams have played twice in European competition for a win apiece, but Tottenham’s attacking firepower should be too much for the Dutch side to handle.

Best bet- Tottenham to win at $2.

Borussia Dortmund versus Atletico Madrid

Thursday, 25 October 2018 at 5am at Westfalenstadion, Dortmund

Two undefeated teams in group A meet on Thursday morning in a fixture that may well go a long way to deciding who finishes at the top of the group.

Dortmund is a $2.50 favourite to win the match, with the visitors from Madrid paying $3. The draw is priced at $3.40.

It has been a successful campaign for both clubs in European competition so far this season, with Dortmund recording an away with at Club Brugge and a 3-0 home win against Monaco.

Atletico toppled Club Brugge 3-1 at home in their most recent game and beat Monaco 2-1 on the road.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone is expected to have a fully fit squad to choose from ahead of this match, with Dortmund needing to assess injuries to Jeremy Toljan, Marcel Schmelzer and Manuel Akanji ahead of this match.

The hosts are sitting at the top of the Bundesliga and are undefeated after eight games.

Atletico are fifth in La Liga but find themselves just two points adrift of first placed Barcelona.

The visitors are undefeated in their past six European matches and we expect that streak to continue on Thursday. They will prove to be a challenge for Dortmund to break down defensively, with a draw a positive result for both teams.

Best bet- Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid draw at $3.40.
