US Open Womens Singles: Preview, Best Bets and Odds

Mon, Aug 27, 1:14pm by Staff Writer

Former world number one Serena Williams is hunting her seventh US Open title in her return to Flushing Meadows after missing the 2017 event due to the birth of her first child.

Williams is a $7 favourite to win the US Open, after making the final of Wimbledon with little preparation less than two months ago.

Serena is the 17th seed in New York and has been drawn to potentially take on world number one Simona Halep in the fourth round. A clash against older sister Venus Williams is also on the cards in the third round in a star-studded first quarter of the draw.

Halep is $7.50 to win the US Open, with the Romanian winning her first Grand Slam at this year’s French Open.

Her best result in New York is a semi-final finish in 2016, but a recent finals appearance in Cincinnati is sure to give her plenty of encouragement ahead of the final major of the year.

Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber is yet to regain her grass court form but is now a renowned big name player and is $8.50 to win the US Open at Sportsbet.

American Sloane Stephens is also $8.50 to win the US Open and is the tournament’s defending champion, after defeating Madison Keys in an all-American affair in 2017.

Stephens made the 2018 French Open final and is a player who performs better on the big stage.

Czech Petra Kvitova retired in New Haven last week, but the number five seed should be healthy and eager to progress deep into the second week in New York.

Her best finish at Flushing Meadows is a quarter final appearance in 2015 and 2017 and faces rising star Aryna Sabalenka in a potential third round match.

Seventh seed Elina Svitolina has been a steady tour player thus far in her career, but has not progressed deep into Grand Slam tournaments so far.

Her best appearance at a Grand Slam came in reaching the quarterfinals of this year’s Australian Open.

She reached the fourth round in New York last year and given her lack of experience late in Grand Slams, her price of $19 to win the US Open is one to steer clear of.

2017 finalist Madison Keys is $21 to go one step further this year and win the US Open, while Cincinnati winner Kiki Bertens is $21 and an in-form pick to win the US Open.

Caroline Wozniacki has been battling injury concerns in recent weeks, with the 2018 Australian Open winner another to steer clear of when it comes to an outright selection.

Maria Sharapova is $34 to win the US Open and is the 22nd seed in New York. She faces veteran Patty Schnyder in the first round and faces a potential third round match against 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko.

It is hard to go past Serena Williams in Grand Slam events and her performance at Wimbledon showed she certainly has what it takes to go deep in tournaments, despite little match practice.

The conditions will be much tougher in New York though, with heat and humidity sure to play a role.

Simona Halep has been in blistering hard court form in recent times and should be able to grind Williams down. A win against the veteran in the fourth round will open up Halep’s run to the final.
