Williams and Djokovic the odds on favourites at US Open

Fri, Sep 7, 11:13am by Staff Writer

The US Open is only days away from crowning a new men’s and women’s singles champion, with the semi-finals taking place on Friday and Saturday morning.

Novak Djokovic is now the outright favourite to win the men’s US Open title, priced at $1.91 at Sportsbet.

Djokovic has been the most impressive of the seeded players to this point in the tournament, dropping only two sets thus far.

He has not had a challenging run to the semi-finals, beating Marton Fucsovics, Tennys Sandgren, Richard Gasquet, Joao Sousa and John Millman.

Djokovic takes on 21st seed and 2014 US Open finalist Kei Nishikori for a spot in the final.

Nishikori’s draw has been far tougher than Djokovic’s with his five set quarterfinal win against Marin Cilic his best performance in some time.

Djokovic will start the match as a $1.17 favourite, with Nishikori a $5.40 outsider. He is $13 to win the US Open.

The second semifinal has top seed and defending champion Rafael Nadal taking on a former champion Juan Martin Del Potro.

Nadal was the pre-tournament favourite to win the US Open, but a number of long, gruelling matches have the Spaniard looking weary.

A four-hour, four set match against Karen Khachanov in the third round was followed by another four set match in the round of 16 against Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Wednesday’s quarterfinal win against Dominic Thiem in a fifth set tiebreaker took nearly five hours, with Nadal clearly struggling with the heat and humidity on court.

Del Potro has dropped only one set on his way to a second successive US Open semi final.

The Tower of Tandil has had a much easier run to the semi finals, defeating Donald Young, Denis Kudla, Fernando Verdasco and Borna Coric, all in straight sets.

Big serving American John Isner proved no match for Del Potro, who looks in great shape heading into the semi finals.

What counts against the Argentinian is his poor head-to-head record against Nadal. Rafa has gotten the better of Del Potro the past three times they have met and all there were at Grand Slam’s.

Nadal is $3.40 to win the US Open, with Del Potro priced at $5.50.

For their match on Saturday morning, it is Nadal who is the favourite at $1.64, with Del Potro a $2.31 shot.

Serena Williams has progressed to another US Open final after easily dispatching of Latvian Anastasia Sevastova in the semi finals.

Williams is looking as good as ever, with her powerful ball striking still no match for many on the women’s tour.

She is seeking her seventh US Open title and first since 2014. She is the overwhelming favourite to claim that title at $1.36 at Sportsbet.

Her run to the final has seen Williams drop only one set, in the round of 16 to Kaia Kanepi.

William’s opponent will be either Madison Keys or Naomi Osaka.

Keys made the 2017 US Open final and is $4.33 to win the 2018 event. She has a 3-0 head-to-head record against Osaka, including a three-set win at the 2016 US Open.

This is unchartered territory for the 20-year-old Japanese player, who has only dropped one set on her way to the semi finals.

Her draw has not been a challenging one, with her best win coming in the round of 16 against Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.

Osaka is $6.50 to win the US Open.
