Aussies set to continue Australia Day ODI dominance in Adelaide

Wed, Jan 25, 3:47pm by Head Editor

Preview: Australia v Pakistan, Fifth ODI

Date and Time: Thursday, January 26, 2:20 pm AEDT

Venue: Adelaide Oval

TV: Channel Nine

The picturesque Adelaide Oval will be bathed in sunshine when both the Pakistan and Australian cricket sides line up for the Australian national anthem to celebrate Australia Day on Thursday.

The mood is always jovial on January 26 in Adelaide when the venue hosts the traditional Australia Day encounter but given the home side have already taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series, the atmosphere should be even more festive.

The teams were locked at a win apiece when the sides headed west to play the third game  but since then it’s been all Australia with the world champions scoring back to back wins at the WACA and the SCG.

As has been the case all series, the hosts will go in as strong favourites. The Aussies are too short for us at $1.21 while if you fancy an upset, the visitors are at the juicy odds of $4.45.

David Warner ($3.50 to be Australia’s top scorer here) put Australia in control in Sydney on Sunday, scoring a blistering 130 runs off 119 deliveries at the top of the order. Skipper Steve Smith ($4) fell short of his half-century by a solitary run while both Travis Head ($6) and Glenn Maxwell ($11) scored half-centuries towards the end of the innings.

Maxwell’s knock of 78 runs off 44 balls is exactly why he has been selected in the side and his talent was on display for all to see. The next step for the Victorian is to find some consistency.

Chasing a massive total of 354 to win, Pakistan were bowled out for 267. The 86-run win secured the Aussies a series win. Opening batsman Sharjeel Khan top-scored with 74 and is $5 to top score again. Mohammad Hafeez ($6) showed some good signs but was dismissed by Adam Zampa, the spinner was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with three wickets along with Josh Hazelwood.

Pakistan’s lone victory at this venue against Australia came back in 1996, with an overall record 6-1 in Australia’s favour.

This match will be the 14th time since 1985 that this venue has hosted a ODI match involving the national team on Australia Day. The Aussies will make it win number 12 from 14 games.

While is ODI record at this ground isn’t great with just one score over 50 in five previous matches here, take Warner to make a 50 at $2.21. He’s in superb form and coming off winning his second Allan Border medal on Monday night.

Suggested Bet: Dave Warner to make a 50: $2.21
