England favourites for Women’s World Cup final

Sun, Jul 23, 10:47am by Senior Writer

England go into Sunday’s ICC Women’s World Cup final as overwhelming favourites to win the trophy for the fourth time when they host India at Lord’s.

England, who won the tournament in 1973, 1993 and 2009, have never lost a World Cup on home soil and have won seven of their eight matches this time around, with their only defeat coming against India in their opening match of the tournament.

They are $1.51 to win the final, with India at $2.51 after they beat six-time and defending champions Australia in the semi final.

The star of that match was undoubtedly Harmanpreet Kaur, who made a record-breaking 171 as India made 4-281 and then dismissed Australia for 245.

It was a breakout performance from Kaur, who hadn’t scored more than 60 in her previous six knocks at the tournament. But the bookies aren’t predicting her to back up that effort and she is $10 to be top runscorer in the match.

Top of that market is England star Sarah Taylor at $5.50. She has scored 351 runs at the tournament including 147 of 104 balls against South Africa. Indian skipper Mithali Raj is next best at $6 having compiled 392 runs, second only behind Australia’s Ellyse Perry, in her World Cup to date.

England opener Tammy Beaumont ($7) has scored more runs than any other English woman this tournament, including 148 as part of a 275-run stand with Taylor against SA, while captain Heather Knight ($9.50) has also had a big month, averaging over 50 and getting a ton of her own against Pakistan in June.

England’s semi-final against South Africa was dominated by the ball rather than the bat, with the home side bowling very well as a team, while executing a couple of key run outs. Their run chase wasn’t convincing and they got that win with just two balls to be spare, with Taylor top scoring with 54.

If England have a weakness is that they don’t have a major wicket-taker, with Knight and Alex Hartley leading the way with just eight each for the tournament, which is outside the top 15. Hartley and Katherine Brunt top the leading wicket-takers markets for England in the final at $4.50 apiece.

India’s Deepti Sharma has 12 wickets this World Cup, while Poonam Yadav has nine. Sharma and Yadav are both $4.50 to get most wickets for India in the final.

This looms a battle to be decided by England’s performance with the ball and India with the bat. In their match earlier in the tournament, Indian openers Punam Raut and Smriti Mandhana dominated with 144-tun stand which set the scene for the Indian win. England’s chase never got going, with four of their ten wickets falling via run outs.

With that in mind, the $2.51 about an Indian win appeals. Kaur’s efforts in the semi were outstanding and they can build on that to claim their first-ever World Cup win.
