Hurricanes and Strikers face crucial Hobart clash

Sun, Jan 1, 11:07am by Senior Writer

Preview: Hobart Hurricanes v Adelaide Strikers

Time and Date: Monday January 2, 7:10pm AEDT

Venue: Blundstone Arena, Hobart

TV: Channel 10

Adelaide Strikers re-invigorated their 2016/17 BBL title aspirations with a brilliant bowling performance on New Year’s Eve against the Sydney Strikers and have a chance to square the ledger at 2-2 when they travel to Hobart to face the Hurricanes off a two-day break.

The Strikers looked in trouble when they posted a mediocre target of 153, but it proved perfectly defendable after some excellent bowling saw the Sixers lose 5-11 in 4.3 overs. Billy Stanlake led the wicket takers with 3-17, but a brilliant 2-10 from four overs from Ben Laughlin was also crucial.

That win put extra pressure on the Hurricanes ahead of this one. The Canes have made three big totals, but have only won one match, their opener against the Sixers.

The bookies can’t split these two going into this match, with both the Hurricanes and the Strikers at $1.90.

In many ways, this is a clash of styles, with the Strikers having scored 64 runs fewer across those three matches. The Canes’ 561 total runs is by far the most in the competition.

Tim Paine had scored plenty in the opening two matches, but an early departure from him in the loss to the Heat on December 30, meant none of the Canes’ batsmen really got a foothold. Dan Christian top-scored with 33, while Jonathan Wells added 28.

In terms of this match, Paine heads the Hurricanes’ Hi-Bat market at $3.75, with Kumar Sangakkara second pick at $4.33, despite an underwhelming campaign to date with just 43 runs in three innings. George Bailey and D’Arcy Short are at $5, while Christian is $7.

Chris Jordan has been a good pick-up for the Strikers and has six wickets for the BBL to date, and starts $4 equal favourite for most wickets in this along with Ben Laughlin.  Stanlake’s figures were probably flattered by a couple of tail end wickets on Saturday, but he’s worth considering as well at $4.50.

Ben Dunk and Brad Hodge have both had excellent BBLs to date. Dunk, thanks largely to his 85 in the opening loss against the Heat, has 122 runs for the series, while Hodge has 119, with three solid knocks and an average of 59.5.

Dunk is $4.00 favourite to top score for Adelaide, with Jake Weatherald, who has just 71 from his three innings so far, is equal second pick at $4.50 with Hodge and Travis Head, who has contributed just 43 in his three bats to date.

Shaun Tait is the ‘Canes leading BBL wicket taker with four to date and is $4 joint favourite to be elading wicket-taker here, but he has been taken for 11.8 an over so far, which is one of the key reasons they have struggled to contain teams. Stuart Broad, also $4, has three wickets, but his economy rate is also high at 9.8.

The ‘Canes bowlers, who were smashed to all parts of the Gabba by Chris Lynn and Brendon McCullum on Friday, need to find their rhythm and start giving their strong batting line-up a hope of getting the job done.

Having had a couple of days to sort through that, and with Tait and Broad boasting so much experience, you’d expect at home, the Hurricanes will put up a much better showing.
