Renegades and Hurricanes seek much-needed BBL win

Wed, Jan 11, 2:35pm by Senior Writer

Preview: Melbourne Renegades v Hobart Hurricanes

Date and Time: Thursday January 12, 7:40pm AEDT

Venue: Etihad Stadium, Docklands

TV: Channel Ten

Just one win separates bottom spot from third in the BBL 06 ladder as the group stage enters its final quarter and both the Renegades and the Hurricanes desperately need wins in order to keep themselves in the hunt to make the semi-finals.

The Renegades lost two matches in the space of three days to slip to 2-3 overall and they are now $8.50 to win the tournament. The Hurricanes did the same thing, losing to fellow battlers the Strikers on Friday and the Thunder on Sunday, and are now equal longest price of any team at $26.

The Renegades go into this match as $1.75 favourites, given this match is at their home ground and the ‘Canes look to have lost all form, while Hobart are $2.05.

But the Renegades’ home form this campaign has been patchy. They won their opening match against the Thunder, but then lost a thriller against the Scorchers late in December and then were easily beaten against the Stars under the roof last Saturday.

One of their issues is a lack of runs, with the Renegades having scored fewer runs than any other team in the BBL. Aaron Finch has 201 runs for the series at an average of 40, and made 57 against the Sixers on Monday, having discovered he’d been dropped from the Australian ODI squad.

Finch is $2.70 to top score for them in this match, with Cameron White, who has 159 runs so far, at second pick at $3.30. Outside those two, they have battled for runs but Callum Ferguson, who is $8.50 in hi-bat markets, did score a handy 39 in the last match.

Dan Christian leads the ‘Canes wicket-takers this series with eight and the allrounder is value at $4 to get most wickets for the visitors in this match. Cameron Boyce took that honour last time and is $3.75 to do it again here, the same odds at Stuart Broad, who has seven BBL wickets, but hasn’t been as dangerous as coach Damian Wright would have hoped. Shaun Tait has been the most expensive bowler in the comp and may be finally coming to the end of his usefulness as a T20 cricketer.

The ‘Canes top order have lost the plot of late, with once in-form opening pair Tim Paine and D’Arcy Short combining for just 22 in their past two matches. Kumar Sangakkara was dropped for the Thunder match and his replaced ben McDermott fared well with 31, while George Bailey top scored with 69.

Bailey, who like Finch was dropped from the national ODI team, is good value at $5 to top score again, with McDermott at $5.50. Paine, third on the overall top scorers list with 222 runs, is $3.60 favourite but looks to have lost all touch.

The Renegades have relied heavily on their two spinners, Sunil Narine and Brad Hogg, to restrict the opposition. They have 12 wickets between them and have gone for only 7.5 an over and will be crucial here, where Narine is $3.75 to get most wickets and Hogg is $4. Thisan Perera was handy in his first game, taking 2-26 off four and may be value at $4.50 in that market.

Peter Siddle could return for this match, although the ‘Gades will be wary of putting another underdone paceman in the side given James Pattinson was expensive against the Thunder.

The Renegades’ BBL campaign has never really got going, but they have a good chance against an out of-sort Hurricanes to put things back on course. Finch staying with the squad will prove a major bonus in terms of their batting power, while Perera gives them an extra dimension with ball.
