Scorchers look for quick rebound against Renegades at Docklands

Wed, Dec 28, 9:30am by Senior Writer

Preview: Melbourne Renegades v Perth Scorchers

Date and Time: Thursday December 29, 7:10pm AEDT

Venue: Docklands, Melbourne

TV: Channel Ten

The Scorchers have a chance to rebound quickly from their bad loss to the Sydney Sixers on Tuesday when they travel to Melbourne to take on the unbeaten Renegades at Etihad Stadium on Thursday,

The Scorchers, pre-tournament favourites, now find themselves 1-1 having thrashed Adelaide in their first game, only to struggle with the bat at the SCG this week.

The Renegades won their only match against Sydney Thunder last week, easily defending a strong total thanks to some excellent bowling from their experienced spinners Brad Hogg and Sunil Narine,

The bookmakers can’t split these two teams, currently offering $1.90 for each side to win.

The key for the Scorchers will be to get their top order to fire. Opener Michael Klinger has managed just 19 in two innings, while Shaun Marsh’s return to the line-up against the Sixers saw him hole out for just eight. Mitch Marsh has been better with 31 in each match, but the most important batsman for the Perth team appears to be Ian Bell.

Bell was excellent with 61 in the first match, but battled to 21 against the Sixers. He’s $4.20 to top score for them in this match, with Shaun Marsh at $3.60 and Klinger at $3.75.

The Renegades’ tactic of banking on spin paid dividends against the Strikers with Narine and Hogg taking two wickets each against the Thunder, while Tom Cooper’s off-spinners also proved successful, as he claimed a wicket off the first ball of the innings, and went for just eight off two overs.

Dwayne Bravo, who also took two scalps in that match, is $3.75 first pick to be the Renegades’ leading wicket-taker, with Narine at $3.75 and the ageless Hogg at $4.50 along with Nathan Rimmington.

In terms of the Renegades bats, skipper Aaron Finch was dominant in the opener belting 63 off 37 balls and he is $3.25 to top score again. He is also $7 favourite to be voted Man of the Match.

Callum Ferguson’s first BBL match in a couple of years saw him score a handy 38 and he is $7 to top score for the Renegades, which is the same price as Bravo, who scored 24 in that match. Cameron White may have scored just 1 there but he is second pick for Renegades’ hi-bat on $4, ahead of opener Marcus Harris ($5).

Paceman AJ Tye was excellent for the Scorchers in Sydney, taking 3-15 off his four overs, but he was fighting a virtual one-man battle to stop the Sixers run chase. He is $3.75 equal favourite with David Willey, who was good in the opening game, and Mitchell Johnson, who was brilliant against the Strikers but was rested on Tuesday.

The Scorchers need Johnson to play every game if they are going to have the firepower with the ball to live up to that pre-tournament favouritism. He should play here and be a major weapon.

Having said that, I feel the Renegades have a little more depth and their focus on spin should give them an edge in this match. The Scorchers’ top order struggled against the Sixer’s spinners on Tuesday and it could be the same here,
