Stars desperately need BBL win in second Melbourne derby

Fri, Jan 6, 3:31pm by Senior Writer

Preview: Melbourne Renegades v Melbourne Stars

Date and Time: Saturday January 7, 7:10pm AEDT

Venue: Docklands

TV: Channel Ten

A week after the Renegades’ relatively easy win in the first Melbourne derby at the MCG, the two Victorian teams meet again, this time at the ‘Gades home venue of Etihad Stadium.

But this clash is about much more than local bragging rights with both teams needing wins to keep themselves on track for the semi-finals, having both played just three games to date.

The Renegades are 2-1 while the Stars, who along with their cross-town rivals are $6 third picks to win the BBL, are 1-2 and really need a win here.

They come into this match with the edge in the market at $1.80 while the Renegades are $2.

That’s somewhat puzzling when you consider that their sole win in BBL 06 came in their opening match against the Hurricanes, but since then they have been humbled by the ‘Gades and then lost on the final ball to the previously winless Sydney Thunder.

That defeat was particularly galling, considering their bowlers look to have things under under control when the Thunder were 4-84 after 13 overs. But Eoin Morgan’s late heroics saw the Thunder claim a dramatic win as Ben Hilfenhaus conceded 17 off his final over, including six off the final ball.

Hilfenhaus was the leading wicket taker in that match with two and is $3.75 to do the same here, having taken five in total in three matches. James Faulkner is also $3.75 which seems unders when you consider he has just one wicket in the BBL to date.

That’s the criticism of the Stars, that they don’t take enough wickets. They have only taken four in each match so far.

That puts more pressure back on the batsmen, who haven’t exactly caught fire. Kevin Pietersen hit 60 against the Thunder, but a string of late wickets saw them make just 20 in the last five overs.

Pietersen is second favourite at $4 to top score here for the Stars, while Luke Wright, who is yet to pass 50 this series, is $3.75 top pick with Glenn Maxwell $4.20.

The Renegades have had a week to rest after their Derby win, which was highlighted by veteran Cameron White scoring 64. White got support from Tom Cooper (34no) which Aaron Finch again gave them a quick start. Finch has 117 runs in total off just 75 balls and is $3 favourite to top score his side in this match.

White is $3.50, while Cooper looks value at $8 as does Sunil Narine at the same odds after he opened the batting last week.

But the key to the Renegades success this series have been their spinners, with Brad Hogg and Narine doing a superb job. They have nine wickets between them in the three games to date and have both gone for just over six an over.

With that in mind, they share the top line of the market for most Renegades wickets at $3.75. The big boost for the red team is the return of James Pattinson, who is a great replacement for Dwayne Bravo, whose tournament ended with a hamstring injury. With Peter Siddle also set to return alter in the tournament, the ‘Gades are in good shape with the ball. Pattinson is $4 to claim most wickets here.

The BBL has been waiting for the star-studded Stars to spark up over the first three weeks of the tournament, but I’m not so sure that they will live up to the hype. The Renegades look in better form and are better equipped to handle the drop in Etihad pitch.
