Sydney Smash kicks off Saturday BBL double header

Fri, Jan 13, 2:25pm by Head Editor

Preview: Sydney Sixers v Sydney Thunder

Date and Time: Saturday January 14, 6:10pm AEDT

Venue: SCG, Sydney

TV: Live on Channel Ten

It’s third versus last when the Sixers host the Thunder at the picturesque Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday. Both teams were victorious in their respective league fixtures before coming into this one. While the hosts defeated the Hobart Hurricanes in their last fixture, the visitors beat the Melbourne Renegades on Monday.

Sportsbet have installed the Sixers as $1.75 favourites with the Thunder at $2.07 to win just their third game of the season.

Carlos Brathwaite and Pat Cummins had each claimed two wickets each as the Thunder conceded 8/161 in their match against Hobart on Sunday. However, the latter has been called up to international duty so won’t be available for selection in this one.

The Sydneysiders went on to win with 19 deliveries to spare thanks to the efforts of Shane Watson and James Vince. While Watson made 55 off 31 deliveries, Vince scored 44 off 28 deliveries from the top of the order.

The Sixers chased down 170 against the Renegades the following night with a collective batting effort, led by opener Daniel Hughes who made 41 off 29 and veteran keeper Brad Haddin who managed 31 off 23 at the death to guide the club home.

I’m backing the Sixers to be too strong in this one, they have the deeper batting lineup and more options with the ball.

Suggested Bet: Sixers to win: $1.75

Preview: Perth Scorchers v Melbourne Stars

Date and Time: Saturday January 14, 9:15pm AEDT

Venue: WACA, Perth

TV: Live on Channel Ten

The Stars, who currently sit in fourth place, head west for a crucial match against the top of the table Scorchers. A win for Melbourne will see them take top spot though as they have a better net run rate.

Both teams are coming off a win and Sportsbet had this one listed as a tight affair with the Scorchers at $1.80 and the Stars at $2.

Perth skipper Michael Klinger led from the front in their win against the Heat, smashing 81 runs off only 54 deliveries in their top of the table blockbuster, the side putting a solid 156 on the board.

Andrew Tye led their efforts with the ball with four wickets to his name, including a hattrick as the opposition could only manage 129 all out from 19.2 overs.

Meanwhile, the Stars held the Strikers to 8/152 with Scott Boland the pick of the bowlers with four wickets to his name. The man of the match though was Ben Hilfenhaus who not only picked up two wickets but then guided his side home with 32 not out off just 24 balls.

The Scorchers will be confident of their chances at home and are rightly favourites after defeating the top team, the Heat. The Stars have not been able to put together any consistent form so far this campaign.
