Round 25 kicks off on Friday night in the City of Churches, when Adelaide United host Perth Glory. The reigning premiers are no longer at the foot of the table after a stunning 3-2 win in Gosford over the Mariners last Saturday afternoon.
Speaking of Sydney FC, the newly-crowned premiers will be hoping to celebrate their new piece of silverware with another three points against City.
The Wanderers can to take one step closer to wrapping up a finals spot when they take on the struggling Newcastle Jets on Saturday. Melbourne Victory will be looking to bounce back against the Phoenix on Sunday before the team who beat them last start – Brisbane Roar – host the Mariners.
With only three games remaining for each club in the regular season, the race for a finals berth is heating up. Here’s the best bets for Round 25 A-League season:
Newcastle Jets v Western Sydney Wanderers, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle, Saturday April 1. 5:35pm AEDT
After putting Melbourne City to the sword last week, the Wanderers are five points clear of Wellington in sixth place. They can stretch that gap even further with a win over the eighth-placed Jets on Saturday.
That win would all but secure them a spot in the finals and is priced at $2.20. The Jets are coming off a terrible showing across the ditch last weekend, where they lost 5-0 to the Phoenix. You can get $3 for them to turn it around here; the draw is at $3.65.
The Wanderers are starting to hit some form at the right end of the season. They’ve won three of their past five and losing only once in that time.
Confidence is high in the Western Sydney camp and according to Argentine attacking midfielder Nico Martinez, the key has been a more compact defensive focus from the team.
The Jets on the other hand, cannot wait for the season to end, their finals chances came to an end in last week’s horrible loss. They haven’t won in seven weeks, and have lost their last three by at least two goals.
Suggested Bet: Wanderers to win: $2.20
Sydney FC v Melbourne City, Allianz Stadium, Sydney, Saturday April 1, 7:50pm AEDT
After winning the Premiers Plate last weekend, the Sky Blues will be looking to celebrate their new piece of silverware by beating their FFA Cup Final conquerors – Melbourne City.
City lost 3-1 to the Wanderers last Friday night, to continue their poor run of form, they’ve only won one game form their past four starts. The FFA Cup Champions are in third place by goal difference only ahead of Brisbane.
Sydney were once again superb last weekend, beating Perth on their home deck by three goals to nil. They can’t let their form slide now though, as they’ll want to hit the finals with momentum. They’ll have their eyes on Brisbane’s record haul of 65 points in a season, which is now just two wins away.
As is always the case with football, when it comes to knockout final, you are only one bad performance away from having the season come to an end, and Graham Arnold’s men will be wary of that.
The Premiers have won 18 of their 24 league games this season, and I’m backing them to make it 19 of 25 here.
Suggested Bet: Sydney to win: $1.75
Melbourne Victory v Wellington Phoenix, AAMI Park, Melbourne, Sunday April 2, 5:00pm AEDT
Victory will welcome back a trio of their most important attacking players on Sunday when they host the Phoenix, who need the three points to stay in the finals hunt.
The Phoenix are coming off a brilliant 5-0 win at home against a hapless Jets outfit, but are still five points behind the Wanderers in the sixth and last finals spot.
They dominated that contest with former-Victory player – Kosta Barbarouses -opening the scoring. He’ll be keen to impress in this one.
Victory’s 1-0 loss in Brisbane on Saturday made it official that the club couldn’t catch Sydney for the Premiership but still obviously have eyes on the Championship on the first Sunday in May.
That loss was all the more frustrating for Kevin Muscat’s men given that the club was without Besart Berisha, Marco Rojas and James Troisi, who were all on International duty.
Now that all three have returned to the side, the $1.55 for a Victory win looks safe. The Phoenix are at the juicy odds of $5.60 and the draw is $4.25.
Suggested Bet: Victory to win: $1.55
Multi of the week: Combining the below for $5.96 at Sportsbet
