Melbourne Victory blew the chance to keep their momentum going in their midweek clash with Wellington, losing 3-0. A win would have seen them go to within two points of the ladder leading Sydney FC, next up they head west to meet Perth Glory on Saturday night.
City have stumbled and have only won twice over the last month-and-a-half, while the Mariners are quickly slipping out of finals contention and need a win to bolster their chances.
Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers clash on Sunday at Campbelltown Stadium to conclude Round 16 action. It’s a crucial game for both sides, who are each chasing a finals spot.
WATCH: Our Preview of Round 16 of the A-League
The Wanderers ($1.85) will overtake the Jets ($3.60) if they win, while Newcastle will extend their lead to five points over WSW if they take home all three points.
Here’s the best three bets for round 16 of the A-League season:
Sydney FC v Adelaide United, Allianz Stadium, Sydney, Friday January 20, 7:50pm AEDT
Competition leaders Sydney FC take on reigning premiers Adelaide United on Friday night at Allianz Stadium. Sydney were held to a 0-0 stalemate in the derby with the Wanderers last week, while Adelaide registered just their second win of the season when they stunned City.
In front of over 40,000 fans, the crosstown rivals cancelled each other out in the second meeting of the Sydney clubs this season. For the first time, the Harbour City’s hottest ticket ended scoreless, with both goalkeepers in inspired form.
Adelaide had no such troubles finding the net in their win over Melbourne City. The 2-1 win was one of the upsets of the season and just the second time they’ve tasted success this campaign.
I’m backing Sydney to bounce back into the winners’ circle here with a comfortable win. They are still on track to become the A-League’s first ever invincibles.
Suggested Bet: Sydney FC to win: $1.50
Wellington Phoenix v Brisbane Roar, Westpac Stadium, Wellington, Saturday January 21, 5:35pm AEDT
The first game on Saturday sees the Wellington Phoenix entertain Brisbane Roar with both clubs playing against Melbourne Victory in their last start.
Phoenix managed to scrape a win over the Mariners last week, and then produced their best performance of the season on Tuesday, beating Victory 3-0. Brisbane meanwhile come into this showdown after falling 3-2 to Victory – their second consecutive defeat by that margin.
After going 3-0 down inside the opening half an hour, Brisbane fought their way back into the contest against Victory last Friday. John Aloisi’s side enjoyed the bulk of the possession in the second half but were unable to find the equaliser, something that’s been a problem for them this campaign.
The ‘Nix’ climbed into the top six with their brilliant performance on Tuesday night, former Victory player Kosta Barbarouses putting the icing on the cake with a stunning strike in injury time. I’m backing them to continue their good form in this one.
Suggested Bet: Wellington to win: $2.80
Perth Glory v Melbourne Victory, NIB Stadium, Perth, Saturday January 21, 8:00pm AEDT
Melbourne Victory are clocking up the air miles this week, after losing in New Zealand on Tuesday, they now fly to Perth to face the Glory on Saturday night. The hosts are used to travel and are coming back from Newcastle, where they drew 2-2 to remain in sixth position on the table.
Victory are attempting to chase down Sydney at the top of the ladder and could have pulled within just two points of the Sky Blues with a win over Wellington but they were completely outplayed in that fixture.
Melbourne looked to have secured the equaliser as the hour mark neared, Rojas’s well-worked corner finding Leigh Broxham in acres of space out wide only for Moss to parry the powerfully struck volley wide.
Ex-Socceroo Adam Taggart netted in the seventh minute to give the Glory the lead in Newcastle on Sunday before they went behind thanks to a pair of goals to the home side. Irishman Andy Keogh levelled the scores just before the hour mark and it could have been even better for Perth as Taggart came closest to breaking the deadlock in the final 20 minutes.
I’m happy to forgive Victory for their performance on Tuesday, hoping that it was an aberration. They had won six straight going into that contest and I’m backing them to bounce back into the winner’s circle here.
