A-League Round 26 Best Bets: Sydney FC to keep on winning

Wed, Apr 5, 7:04pm by Head Editor

The penultimate round of the season kicks off on Friday night in the sporting capital of the world when Melbourne City host Adelaide United, a match the hosts simply must win as they’re clinging onto fourth spot.

Sydney FC, the newly-crowned premiers will be hoping to celebrate their new piece of silverware with another three points.

The Phoenix host Sydney on Saturday, hoping to continue their charge towards the finals, before the other Sydney side – the Wanderers – host the Victory in a blockbuster at the Olympic Stadium.

The final match of a triple-header on Saturday will see the Glory ($2.30) host Brisbane ($2.80) in a tight betting match.

A four-game winless run means Perth are now in sixth and just four points ahead of Wellington, while Brisbane can secure a top four spot, and a home final, with a draw.

Sunday’s F3 derby could also the battle for the dreaded wooden spoon, with both sides experiencing a dramatic fall from grace in recent weeks, whoever loses this game between the Jets ($2.65) and the Mariners ($2.45) will likely finish last.

Here’s the best bets for Round 26 of the A-League season:

Melbourne City v Adelaide United, AAMI Park, Melbourne, Friday April 7, 7:50pm AEST

Melbourne City entertain Adelaide United in a crucial match on Friday night. City are hanging onto their spot in the top four by a thread after losing to Sydney and need to win against the reigning champions who are playing some great football albeit too late in the season.

That all-important win for City is priced at $1.60. United haven’t lost in the league since the end of February and are $5 to win their third game in four weeks. The draw is at $4.20.

The last two weeks have been horrible for City, they’ve had to travel to Sydney to face both the Harbour City’s teams, losing twice and conceding six goals in the process.

They lost to Western Sydney two weeks ago and now find themselves just two points in front of that club in fourth place. They need to win to keep the Wanderers at bay.

The good news is that they’re back on home soil here, a place where they’ve lost only twice in their past eight games. Their squad is an experienced one that will stand up with so much on the line and claim an invaluable three points.

Suggested Bet: City to win: $1.60

Wellington Phoenix v Sydney FC, Westpac Stadium, Wellington, Saturday April 8, 5:35pm AEST

The club with the best record in the history of the A-League, Sydney FC head across the ditch to play the Phoenix, whose unlikely charge towards a finals spot has gathered momentum in the past fortnight.

A Sydney win, which would be their 20th from 26 starts – an unheard-of feat – is priced at $1.90 with the hosts at $3.70 to win their third in a row and the draw is at $4.

Sydney keep having challenges presented to them and they keep delivering week in, week out and although their attack is spoken about each and every week, it’s their defence – which has conceded just 11 goals against in 25 games that has been outstanding.

Wellington belted the Victory last week by three goals to nil to continue their surge up the ladder. Their attack has been prolific in 2017, netting 21 goals in their past 13 games.

Phoenix are now just four points adrift of sixth-placed Perth but taking on the all-conquering Sydney side is a bridge too far.

Suggested Bet: Sydney to win: $1.85

Western Sydney Wanderers v Melbourne Victory, ANZ Stadium, Sydney, Saturday April 8, 7:50pm AEDT

The Wanderers will be aiming for four straight wins when they welcome Melbourne Victory to the Olympic Stadium on Saturday night. The hosts have scored three goals in each of their last three wins, and now have their eyes set on a top four finish.

For the visitors, it’s a different story. They seem to have put the cue in the rack, leading Brisbane by six points in second place, with two games to go. They have a goal difference of 10 better than the Roar so Kevin Muscat’s men seem to have been given the instruction to can rest up until the finals.

Sportsbet has the in-form Wanderers as a $2.30 favourite, with a Victory win priced at $2.85 and the draw at $3.60.

Western Sydney have much more on the line than Victory in this one, they can end up in the top four by the end of the round, if City lose to Adelaide. They’ve also found form in the ACL – where they beat FC Seoul a few weeks ago – and I’m taking them to continue their surge up the ladder here.

Suggested Bet: Wanderers to win: $2.30
