The final round of the season kicks off on Friday night in Melbourne and while the finalists are set, the order in which they finish, and who gets to host the first finals, are still up in the air.
A club who cannot move from their position of second is Melbourne Victory, they’ll host Central Coast Mariners, whose disappointing season will come to an end.
The battle for third is where the interest is, with City, Roar and the Glory in a three-way battle for the coveted home final position. Perth face City on Sunday in the match of the round, and must win by four or more goals to overturn their ladder positions, while Brisbane ($1.61) host Wellington ($5).
As it stands, Melbourne City will face Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane Roar will host Perth Glory but things could change. City and Roar both sit on 39 points with the Melbourne side in third place by one in goal differential.
The Wanderers are a point further back and can only hope for fifth at best by leapfrogging Perth. Here’s the best bets for Round 27 of the A-League season:
Melbourne Victory v Central Coast Mariners, AAMI Park, Melbourne, Friday April 14. 7:50pm AEST
Kevin Muscat’s men seem to have put the cue in the rack, they’ve known that they can’t move from the all-important second place for the past five weeks. They haven’t won for a month, while their opponents are fighting to avoid finishing on the bottom of the ladder.
The Mariners were able to claim a great 2-0 victory against the Jets to elevate themselves off the bottom last week, however, they sit just one point clear of both Adelaide and Newcastle going into the last game.
Melbourne’s results seem to indicate that they’ve got one eye set on the finals already but last weekend’s 0-0 draw with the red-hot Wanderers was their best result in four games and shows me that they’ll be too strong for the lowly Mariners side here.
Suggested Bet: Half-Time/ Full-Time: Victory/ Victory: $1.83
Adelaide United v Western Sydney Wanderers, Coopers Stadium, Adelaide, Saturday April 15. 7:50pm AEST
It’s been a season to forget for the Champions, and they enter the final round in a battle to avoid the wooden spoon. The Wanderers on the other hand, have finished the season strongly, winning three of their last five, and not losing in that time.
Both of these clubs played in Asian Champions League this midweek with the Reds claiming a great win over Jeju United to propel them back into contention in Group H. Adelaide now sit 2nd in the group, ahead of Jeju on goal difference with a tough game against the undefeated Jiangsu Suning to come.
The news wasn’t as good for the Wanderers, they lost 3-2 at home to FC Seoul and are now bottom of Group F, 6 points down with just 2 games to go.
Domestically though, they have locked themselves into the A-League finals and are in a battle with Perth Glory for the 5th position.
Four of the last six fixtures between these two teams have ended in a draw, three of them scoreless. Adelaide will be throwing everything they have at this game so I’m expecting to see some goals either way but the visitors have too much to play for.
Suggested Bet: Wanderers to win: $2.25
Perth Glory v Melbourne City, NIB Stadium, Sunday April 16. 7:00pm AEST
The match of the round is the last one of the regular season when Melbourne City travel to Perth to play the Glory on Sunday night. This is the only game where both teams have something to play for in the final round.
Tim Cahill found the back of the net for the eighth time this year as City registered an important home win against Adelaide last week. He’s beginning to look dangerous again ahead of a finals campaign you just know he’ll be a big player in.
The hosts are also coming in off the back of a win, they beat Brisbane 3-1 at home to keep the pressure on this week’s opponent, and the team they beat for third spot.
The scenarios are endless here, if Brisbane lose or draw then a point will be all that the visitors need. This City squad has the experience to get a result they need here, I’m taking the win or draw option.
Suggested Bet: City to win or draw (double chance): $1.57
