Biggest Sydney A-League derby has Wanderers as favourites

Fri, Oct 7, 2:27pm by Head Editor

Preview: A-League Round One: Western Sydney Wanderers v Sydney FC

Date and Time: Saturday October 8 at ANZ Stadium, Sydney

TV: Live on Fox Sports

Tensions are rising ahead of the biggest Sydney Derby ever that is expected to smash the attendance record for an A-League match. The Wanderers play host to bitter rivals Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium in what is undoubtedly the highlight of the opening round.

The bookies have a foot in each camp ahead of this huge match, having trouble splitting the two Sydney clubs. Sportsbet has the Wanderers at $2.50 and Sydney FC at $2.62. The draw looks juicy at $3.40.

Graham Arnold is known for his big comments and he hasn’t let us down this week, stating that the Sky Blues have the upper hand over the Wanderers in experience and that gives them the edge. Wanderers striker Brendon Santalab returned fire, calling it a ‘typical cheap-shot’ by ‘Arnie’.

The Western Sydney Wanderers are still reeling from their grand final heartbreak last season. Coach Tony Popovic identified the need to bring in some creative players in the off-season and the club has delivered, bringing in Nicolas Martinez from Olympiakos and Japanese star Jumpei Kusukami.

This comes after losing winger Romeo Castelen who played with the club for two years and scored three goals in last season’s finals. The Wanderers will be itching for a win over their rivals, by the time the match kicks off on Saturday it will be 1001 days without a derby win. That’s seven straight matches.

Sydney FC have tasted victory four times in that period and will be hoping their new signing, Brazilian striker Bobo can hit the back of the net early. He’s had a long and distinguished career that included 144 appearances and 58 goals for Turkish powerhouse, Besiktas. His early weeks with the club have the squad brimming with confidence.

Both sides will be hell-bent on claiming early bragging rights in for the new season. The contest is set to be the biggest regular season clash between two Sydney teams in any code at the Olympic Stadium. I think we will see plenty of goals at the neutral venue, but I think ultimately, both sides will walk away with a point each.
