Chelsea v Birmingham City Betting Preview – Wednesday 20th April, 2011

Tue, Apr 19, 10:48pm by Kevin Pitstock

This is an interesting match-up, as Chelsea, who now seem to believe the title is beyond them, face a Birmingham side who look in a good position to avoid relegation. Chelsea are 8 points behind United going into this week’s fixtures in third place and they have an 8 point cushion on Spurs in 5th, so they do also look in a good position to qualify for the Champions League. Birmingham’s weekend win over Sunderland has pushed them up to 14th, with a 5 point gap on the bottom three. They also have a game in hand on everyone else at the bottom. This game gets underway at 04:45 AST on Thursday morning.

Chelsea have one or two injury problems ahead of this match. Ramires and Alex are both ruled out with the same injuries that saw them miss the win at West Bromwich Albion, and with Branislav Ivanoivc also missing, Jose Bosingwa is expected to play. Their Premier League form is good though, with the Blues on a seven match unbeaten run, though that time period does include their Champions League exit against Manchester United. Their win against West Bromwich Albion was a very solid performance against an in-form team, with Chelsea reverting to their favoured 4-3-3 formation and showing an upturn in performance. Fernando Torres, for those of you who like novelty bets, has now passed more than 700 minutes in a Chelsea shirt without scoring.

Birmingham go into this game looking to follow up their weekend win over Sunderland and they remain without the 6’8” striker Nikola Zigic, who has a groin problem. A small run of form has moved them away from immediate danger, with two wins (both at home) and a draw at Blackburn Rovers. They also caught Chelsea in one of their weaker periods to win 1-0 at St.Andrew’s in the reverse fixture thanks to a goal from Lee Bowyer. They tend to struggle against Chelsea in general though, having drawn blanks in five of their last seven meetings. They also find winning hard, with just 8 victories all season, and they like to keep matches tight.

Assuming Chelsea stick with their 4-3-3, they should grind out a win here and we forecast a 2-0 victory. They are naturally a pretty short price, so the value bet we like here is the $3.75 on Chelsea from IAS Bet to win by exactly two goals, which we rate as a 3/5 bet.

Back a 2 goal Chelsea win on IASBet at $3.75!
