Expect plenty of goals in Brazil v Argentina at MCG

Thu, Jun 8, 3:39pm by Head Editor

Brazil v Argentina, Friday June 9, 8pm AEST, MCG

More than 95,000 fans are expected to cram into the MCG on Friday night, for a friendly that will be anything but. There is no love lost between these South American giants, who currently occupy the top two spots in the FIFA rankings.

Being on Australian soil, there will of course be plenty of neutrals in the crowd, and the good news for them is that a tight contest is predicted. Argentina are currently slight favourites at $2.60, with their fierce rivals right behind them at $2.70, the draw is also considered a strong chance at $3.30.

The odds may be close, but the form-line of the nations is vastly different, Brazil are flying, having won an incredible nine straight matches after what was a disappointing Copa America campaign in June last year, when they were eliminated in the group stage.

That effort was nothing short of a national tragedy and saw head coach Dunga lose his job. Ex-Corinthians boss Tite took over that position, which has yielded immediate dividends, as the five-time World Champions have already secured their place in next year’s World Cup with four games still to play.

Argentina on the other hand, have been poor recently, they currently sit in fifth place in qualifying, which is not a direct qualification position, and have lost three of their last five games.

They also have a new coach, with Jorge Sampaoli stepping in for Eduardo Bauzo, whose left them in a tough spot to qualify for world football’s showpiece event. He has picked a strong squad for this match, looking to start his tenure with a win.

Sampaoli is certainly no stranger to international football, having lifted two Copa Americas in his stint with Chile, ironically defeating his home nation in both finals.

Argentina have not left any big names out of the squad, with Lionel Messi to play alongside Juventus duo Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala, which will ensure they have plenty of quality up front.

Brazil’s squad is not as strong, they’ve left out Dani Alves, Marquinhos, Marcelo, Roberto Firmino and talisman Neyma, much to the displeasure of the Australian promoters.

You can never count the Brazil side out though, with attacking players like Gabriel Jesus, Philippe Coutinho and Douglas Costa, they’ll surely hit the back of the net.

These two managers having plenty of attacking players to choose from, so I like the $13 on offer for a 2-2 draw.

Suggested Bet: 2-2 in the Correct Score market: $13
