Roar go maroon in a bid to end Sky Blues’ winning run

Fri, Nov 18, 10:37am by Head Editor

Preview: A-League Round Seven: Brisbane Roar v Sydney FC

Date and Time: Saturday November 19, 7:50pm AEDT

Venue: Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

TV: Live on Fox Sports

The standout team of the league, Sydney FC, are aiming for seventh heaven when they take on the third-placed Roar in the match of the round at Australia’s best rectangular stadium on Saturday night.

The build-up was intensified this week when the hosts revealed a special maroon jersey that they will wear for the first time when they face the sky blue of the visitors at the old Lang Park (now Suncorp Stadium).

This venue is of course also the home of Queensland’s beloved State of Origin rugby league team, who have regularly dominated the New South Wales Blues. The Roar are hoping to create the same sort of hostile environment in this one that we always see in that code.

Sportsbet had the Sky Blues at $2.30 at the start of the week but they have drifted to $2.50.  The home side were $2.75 on Monday but have since come in slightly to $2.70. The draw has also shortened slightly from $3.60 to $3.50.

Both squads are healthy and will go in at full strength. Brisbane striker Jamie Maclaren is expected to play despite playing almost an hour in Australia’s disappointing 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw in Bangkok on Tuesday night. He is a $6 favourite to score the opener.

John Aloisi’s side are coming off a 1-1 draw with bottom-placed Adelaide but they are struggling in the final third with only six goals so far this campaign. They need to raise their levels in that area of the pitch if they are to trouble the hottest team in the country.

The visitors on the other hand have been lethal in front of goal. Alex Brosque and Filip Holosko have bagged three goals each, while new import Bobo, David Carney and Milos Ninkovic have each grabbed a brace. They’ve scored more goals than any other team in the history of the league for the opening six rounds with 17.

17 is also the number of previous clashes between the two clubs at Suncorp but this is where the home side certainly have the edge. Sydney have come away with all three points just three times. It’s an extremely poor record to overcome but if any side can do it it’s this confident and hungry Sky Blues team.
