With eight rounds remaining in the A-League home and away season, the top of the table Sydney FC can now see the finishing line and with it, potentially the mantle of the league’s first invincibles.
The term ‘invincibles’ is actually an old term that was first coined in football in the 1880’s in reference to the Preston North End side that were coached by William Sudell.
Sudell’s men became football’s first “Invincibles” in 1888/89 when they went unbeaten in the league and won the FA Cup.
In 2003/04, Arsenal achieved the same feat when they went unbeaten in the Premier League and to make the achievement even sweeter, they beat Manchester United to regain the title.
Back on home soil, and Sydney FC are now into $5 with Sportsbet to remain unbeaten for the remaining two months of football. If you are feeling even more confident, then you can get $67 for them to win each of their remaining eight games.
The first of those eight games come on Saturday, when they meet the Wanderers at ANZ Stadium in the third and final Sydney derby of the season. Sportsbet are reporting that 80% of the money ahead of the fixture is with the Sky Blues, making it the most lopsided derby in history.
The club are 11 points clear on top of the table and are $2.05 favourites to win the derby, which would be their 15th win of the 20 games they’ve played this season. An amazing achievement.
One punter has put $50 on them to win 4-0 at the odds of $46.
Sportsbet’s Christian Jantzen said “we’ve taken four times as many bets on Sydney FC as we have on the Wanderers, making this the most one-sided Sydney Derby in history.”
