A multi-million payout looms should Victoria Derby favourite Sacred Elixir win Saturday’s Group 1 race and Hartnell win Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.
Sacred Elixir is now into $2.80 with Sportsbet after being heavily supported during the week, but it is not the straight win bets which worries the big corporate bookmakers, with multi-bets involving Cox Plate winner Winx into Sacred Elixir and $4.20 Cup favourite Hartnell where the big money has gone.
The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that Ladbrokes has over 2000 bets at around $16-$20 on the feature treble
“There are more than 2000 doubles rolling into him from Winx and they are at odds like $16 or $20. Every punter who bet early wanted to be on Winx in the Cox Plate, Sacred Elixir in the Derby and Hartnell in the Melbourne Cup,” Ladbrokes’ Paul Di Cioccio told the SMH.
“We just ha0e to get one of them beaten or else it is going to be very nasty.”
Sacred Elixir firmed sharply for the Derby off his dominant win in last week’s Vase at Moonee Valley.
Money for his all week has been steady, while there has also been significant money for Swear and So Si Bon.
However, many of the bigger bets on Sacred Elixir went on earlier in the carnival after he won the Caulfield Guineas Prelude impressively.
Trainer Tony Pike never made any secret that his ultimate goal was to win the Victoria Derby.
“The punters found him early because the trainer was upfront that he was stayer and he was heading to the Derby and they have just kept getting a good price,” Di Cioccio said.
“While he is not at the Winx level – nothing will get to that level – it is the money from her flowing into him that makes him our worst result in the Derby for a long time.”
Hartnell has been favourite for the Melbourne Cup since his dominant win in the Turnbull Stakes a month ago.
While he was beaten eight lengths by Winx in the Cox Plate, he hasn’t moved in Cup markets, with Caulfield Cup winner Jameka the second pick at $6.50.
The only significant Melbourne Cup move which could come before the barrier draw is conducted Saturday night is if Oceanographer, who is currently $17, wins the Lexus Stakes impressively.
Oceanographer is $2.50 favourite for the Lexus, which he needs to win to guarantee a Cup start.
