Australia favourite to clinch series against New Zealand

Preview: Australia v New Zealand, Second ODI

Date and Time: Tuesday, December 6, 2:20 pm AEDT

Venue: Manuka Oval, Canberra

TV: Channel Nine

Australia and New Zealand head to the nation’s capital for the second match in the Chappell-Hadlee series. The hosts can regain the trophy with a victory after their 68-run win on Sunday.

That win was inspired by skipper Steve Smith, who’s magnificent knock of 164 off 157 balls set a record for the highest ODI score at the SCG. He’s at $3.75 to once again top score for the Aussies.

His heroics didn’t end there though, pulling off an absolute screamer of a catch at backward point to remove Black Caps’ keeper BJ Watling. The 27-year-old was a full stretch, looking like superman and held on with the wrong hand. It’s already being called the catch of the summer and it’s easy to see why. I can’t remember seeing a better one.

Sportsbet has installed Australia as short-priced $1.35 favourites to clinch a 2-0 series win with the Kiwis at $3.21 to keep the series alive.

If they are to do that then Martin Guptill will have to again be the rock in the visitors batting line-up. The opener scored a brilliant century of his own in Sydney on Sunday with his 114 runs coming off just 102 balls.

In 40 previous innings against Australia in all formats, Martin Guptill had never posted three figures. His average in all forms against the Aussies is 24.75 but if you think he’s turned the corner against the green and gold then you can get $3.40 for him to back up and top score for the Kiwis again in this one.

New Zealand will likely make changes to their XI, who had their chance to go in for the kill when they had the hosts reeling at 4/92 but Travis Head joined his skipper at the crease for a match turning partnership of 127 which set up the hosts imposing total of 8/324.

Kiwi quick Tim Southee is a possible option to bolster an inexperienced attack. For Australia, it might be hard to change a winning side that needs only one more victory to reclaim the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy. The visitors have never played a ODI at this venue.

Suggested Bet: Starc may have missed out on Sunday, taking only one wicket but his strike rate suggests a big haul is never far away. I’m backing him to take most wickets for Australia: $3
