It’s quite fitting that we see Wednesday night’s FFA Cup final being contested between the current top two teams in the A-League, which is a rarity in Cup finals.
Despite having dominated the A-League so far this season, Graham Arnold’s Sky Blues will go in as underdogs against the league’s second placed team, Melbourne City.
Sydney have yet to lose in any competition this season after securing six straight wins to open the A-League campaign before drawing away in Brisbane on Saturday.
The league-leaders reached the FFA Cup decider without conceding a goal.
But despite that scintillating form, the Sky Blues are $2.70 win inside the 90 minutes in Melbourne on Wednesday evening. The home side are $2.35 favourites to win in regular time and the draw is paying $3.50.
Should the contest go into extra time or even penalties, Sportsbet has City at $1.57 favourite to lift the cup – what would be the club’s maiden piece of silverware. Sydney, who’ve won the league twice, are at $2.20 to lift their first FFA Cup.
John van ‘t Schip’s side have also impressed in 2016-17, although league losses to Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar have indicated City’s weakness against well organised defences – which Sydney certainly are.
Another market that may be worth throwing a dollar on is the win in a penalty shootout market where you can get $12 for either side to lift the cup should the decider go to a shootout from 11 metres.
Sydney and City are yet to meet in the A-League this season.
City have been strong starters so far in the A-League – no team has scored more than their seven goals in first halves – while Sydney are the best second-half side with 12 goals after the interval.
Based on that, the $31 for City to lead at half-time and Sydney to win could be tempting.
Both clubs have X-factors that may break this game open, for City, Uruguayan star Bruno Fornaroli already has six goals in the league to be equal top with Perth’s Andy Keogh. Of course, you can never rule out Australia’s greatest ever goalscorer, Tim Cahill, he loves big games and is coming off a goal on Friday.
For Sydney, the pair of internationals, Serbian Milos Ninkovic, who has four goals to his name and Brazilian Bobo who has three goals in the league are both in good touch and will need to be marked closely.
I’m backing the Sky Blues to be too strong here, they have been the standout team so far this season with 18 goals in the league and only conceding three. Their well organised defence will hold out City.
