Darren Weir looms as the most likely obstacle between Winx and a second Cox Plate after Palentino joined stablemates Tosen Stardom and Black Heart Bart as serious contenders for Australia’s greatest weight-for-age race after his win in Saturday’s Makybe Diva Stakes.
Palentino vaulted from $34 into $17 in Cox Plate markets with Sportsbet on the strength of his excellent win on Saturday, when he ran over the top of Black Heart Bart to record his second Group 1 success over the Flemington 1600m.
Joining him on that price is Hartnell and The United States, while Highland Reel has shortened from $17 into $15.

French galloper Vadamos shortened from $26 into $21 thanks to his win in a Group 1 mile race in France, with trainer Andre Fabre suggesting a trip to Australia could be on the agenda.
The big change in Melbourne Cup markets saw Irish stayer Wicklow Brave join Signoff as $17 equal favourite on the strength of his win over Order of St George in the Irish St Leger at The Curragh.
Order of St George was $1.14 favourite, but couldn’t run down William Mullins galloper and as a result is now out to $21 with a trip to Australia up in the air.

There are seven other horses at $21, including Idaho, who dropped the rider when a short-priced favourite in the English St Leger on a difficult weekend for trainer Aidan O’Brien.
2014 Cup winner Protectionist, who has a pinched nerve and is only 50-50 to come back to Australia, has drifted out to $26 while 2015 winner Prince of Penzance remains at $34 despite a great run when sixth in the Makybe Diva Stakes.
The Melbourne and Caulfield Cup markets are likely to change considerably over the next two weeks as it becomes apparent which horses are coming to Australia.
Scottish is now $15 equal favourite for the Caulfield Cup with punters going cold on Tarzino after a so-so run in the Makybe Diva Stakes. Tarzino is now $17, while Highland Reel, The United States and Hartnell are all also $15.
Our Ivanhowe, who returned to the track with a good fifth in the Makybe Diva, shortened from $21 into $17, where he joins Tosen Stardom, Tavago and Jameka.
The main market to be shaped over the past weekend was the Caulfield Guineas, where Astern, who won Saturday’s Golden Rose in emphatic fashion, is now a clear $3.20 favourite.
Omei Sword is the same price for the Thousand Guineas, to be run on the same day, October 8.
