Jameka is priced at $6 to become the first horse in 15 years to win the Caulfield-Cup-Melbourne Cup double after her dominant win in the 2400m race at Caulfield on Saturday.
Jameka was $11 last week for the Melbourne Cup but off the strength of her three-length win in the Caulfield Cup as favourite, she is now into a clear second pick for Australia’s richest race on November 1.
Hartnell, who run in this Saturday’s Cox Plate for which he is a $2.80 second favourite, is $5.50 favourite for the Melbourne Cup off the strength of his dominant win over Jameka in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on October 2.
Ethereal, also a four-year-old mare, was the last horse to win Australia’s greatest two handicaps in the same year. But Jameka has already made history as the first Crown Oaks winner to go on and win the Caulfield Cup the following year.
A weight penalty for the Melbourne Cup is expected to be announced early this week.
The other Melbourne Cup shortener from the Caulfield Cup was third-placed Exospheric, who ran a strong third on Saturday and firmed from $21 into $13 for the Melbourne Cup.
Almoonqith’s excellent run when fourth in the Caulfield Cup has seen him tumble in to $17 for the Melbourne Cup, while Scottish is considered highly unlikely to go onto the two-mile race, and is tentatively priced at $21.
Our Ivanhowe (sixth) is now $21 for the Melbourne Cup, while fifth-placed Real Love is $26 along with 12th-placed Tally. Sir John Hawkwood (10th) is $34, Preferment (11th) is $41 along with De Little Engine (9th) and Sacred Master (15th).
Vengeur Masque ran a cracking race when eighth in the Caulfield Cup as a $101 shot is still $67 for the Melbourne Cup, where he is unlikely to get a run without another win.
Heartbreak City, who will be ridden by the world’s best jockey Joao Moreira, has been the big mover of the international horses, moving from $21 into $13.
