Kyrgios, Tomic both too short for Round 2 Aussie Open matches

Australia’s two best hopes at the Australian Open, Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic, head into their second round matches on Wednesday as prohibitive short-price favourites despite having historically had trouble defeating their respective opponents.

Kyrgios, the tournament’s No.14 seed, looked in superb form as he demolished his Round 1 opponent Gastao Elias in straight sets on Monday and goes into his clash with veteran Italian Andreas Seppi as $1.11 favourite with Sportsbet.

Two years ago, the pair met at this tournament and Kyrgios needed five sets to get past Seppi, with the Aussie coming from two sets down in their Round of 16 match at odds of $1.60.

Seppi, who was $2.56 head to head in that match, is much longer here at $6. Those predicting another straight-sets Kyrgios win will have to take $1.72, while 3-1 to Kyrgios is at $3.60 and a repeat of that 2015 result, a five-set Kyrgios win, is priced at $9. That match will be the played in the evening on Hisense Arena.

Tomic, seeded 27, will also be playing at night on Margaret Court Arena against world No.103 Victor Estrella Burgos. The odds reflect the disparity ion rankings with Tomic at $1.07 and Estrella Burgos at $7.

However, the veteran Dominican does have a victory over Tomic in the qualifiers for the Rome Masters back in 2014. Admittedly that was on clay and when the pair met later that year on the hard court in Bogota, Tomic got over the line in three very tight sets.

A Tomic straight sets win is priced at $1.57, with a 3-1 success at $3.75 and a five-set Tomic win at $10.

Before Tomic takes to Margaret Court, Australia’s comeback queen Ash Barty takes on American giant killer Shelby Rogers. That match is priced at $1.66 in Rogers’ favour, with Barty, who took two years off the tour to try her hand at cricket, at $2.13.

The pair have never met, but Rogers, who made the quarters of the French Open last year, caused the shock of the tournament’s first day when she knocked out fourth seed Simona Halep.

She had the crowd behind her then, but won’t have that luxury on Wednesday.

Fellow Aussie Jaimee Fourlis faces an even bigger task when she plays veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova earlier in the day on the same court. Fourlis was just shy of her fifth birthday when Kuznetsova won the 2004 US Open and the market reflects that gulf in experience with the Russian at $1.05 and the Aussie teenager at $8.50.

Fellow 17-year-old Alex De Minaur is given a much better chance of knocking off American Sam Querrey and is priced at $3.45 with Querrey, the No.31 seed, at $1.28.

The top seeds in the men’s and women’s draw are in action on Wednesday in what are expected to be two straight-forward second round matches.

Angelique Kerber may have had her troubles against Lesia Tsurenko in the first round, requiring three sets to get the job done, but the bookies have her at $1.11 to beat Carina Witthoeft, something she has done the past two years at Wimbledon. Witthoeft is $5.90 to upset her compatriot.

Andy Murray is the shortest price possible, $1.01 to beat Andrey Rublev, the world No.152 in the main night match on Rod Laver Arena. Rublev looks unders at $15.

Suggested Bet: Back Kyrgios to win in four sets at $3.60
